I was reading excerpts from this. Extremely boring weekend, I know.

Anyways, the parallels are eerie. Baby boomers in some parts of North America grew up more spoiled and in more affluence. The kids were more self absorbed and more entitled. Kids growing up now in Korea seem the same. A huge generational shift is taking place.
My grandparents generation very different from my parents one. My grandparents generally more poor and talking of the great depression. All those old generations had to work hard while the current Koreans at the top had to do the same and were poorer. More traditional and less option to foriegn things. My grandpa never went out for Mexican or Chinese food, while my boomer parents did. Kids today like many foriegn foods while disliking many Korean traditional foods. Kids today never knew old style poverty.
My parents described when they were kids, people dressed up more and there were smaller "Marts" everywhere with a few department stores. Similiar to Korea several years ago when I first got here.
Strangely similiar in some ways. Current 20 somethings a little rebellious like kids in the 50's, but not too bad. I taught some of them when I first got here. Better behaved than now.
The kids now. Well, stick around. I hear in 2019 that Korean woodstock is going to blow things out of the water. Ha ha. Just make sure you're out of here by the 2020's if it's the 70's all over again with higher crime rates and bad fashion.
I'm sort of kidding here and oversimplifying. But, you folks who were here in the 90's prob felt like you were stuck in the 40's or something. |
