I was back in my old stomping ground on Saturday, walking through one of those outdoor markets. Part of the market was just shut down and now have re-opened with more attractive awning, rooftop, signs, floor, etc. It's a lot cleaner than before.

I was walking though and found some hidden gems. There are several places selling 'old style' roasted chickens. One place had them for as little as 4,000 won each. The most expensive was 6,000. The 4,000 birds were a little smaller but reasonable.

One supermarket has opened, calling itself a 'discount' mart. This is one of the first I have ever seen to call themselves a discount mart and actually have competitive prices. We bought 1.8 kg of 삼겹살 for 10,000 won. The lettuce wraps were cheap too. 1.5 L of coca cola was 2250.

Then we walked down some more and found a clamshell of flawless strawberries for 3000 won. Our next stop was a 돈까스 place. They hand-make them and sell them for 1500 won. They'll even fry them there for you for no extra charge.

It got me thinking that if more markets like this were around, I would have no reason to go to E-Mart or Homeplus anymore. This is the way to compete, not retarded lawsuits.
