My school is reducing the number of vacation days this year by two. The reasoning behind this is that we have more holidays this year than normal. We were also told that this is the norm across Korea (public schools included). Any truth to this? My contract says I get 10 days, this would give me 8. Anything I can do?

This is illegal. The added holidays can't replace the holidays you are entitled to in your contract.

The number of national holidays this year is the same as last year. So they are wrong.
Also if your contact says 10 days then you're entitled to 10 days.

Also this year if any National Holidays fall on the weekend, you get the next business day off... I bet many hagwon owners won't be divulging that tidbit!

Has what been passed? How is this the determining factor? Please explain/expound.

This is a different issue, a caveat to the mix.

But to settle that side issue:

Weekend, no, only sundays. The law was also watered down from all national holidays to include only Seollal, Childrens Day, & Chuseok.

This year there is one extra red day from this (at Chuseok). 2014 calendars show the added wednesday in red, which should prevent argument.

A holiday on a weekend being observed the next business day. I knew it had been discussed, but I was not aware that it had been passed. Is there an official calendar to reflect this new law?

Re: the original post.

The owner's claim that public schools have arbitrarily reduced vacation days is false.

[Not to say they havent been gradually whittling vacation time down, but thats not something they can do mid-contract.]

AFAIK, the whole "extra day" thing has been passed on the public level and isn't observed by private companies.

Has been passed & the one new day it affects in 2014 is indicated as a red day on standard calendars.

From the link:

"The bill is applied to only public offices."

So does this mean hagwons get the benefit?
