I'm a bit worried. Jackson has taken a 200 something page book and turned it into 3 three hour mega films. I read the book when I was 12 in less time.

I'm worried he's put so much detail in it only an extreme die hard fan will appreciate it. There is no way I can take my kid to see it...and it's supposed to be a kid's book.

My kid is gonna love it. He's into all those blockbuster series (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc) and he's been studying hard in preparation for the finals at school this week, so this is going to be a treat for him.

I too am worried that its been turned into a trilogy. I only found out yesterday about that, and whilst I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan and so I am definitely going to see it (on Christmas Eve!) I am a little concerned that the people I watch it with aren't going to like it as much as I undoubtedly will.

Saying that, I literally cannot wait to go and see it this month, I guess I just don't want my friends ruining the experience for me by complaining that its too detailed/boring etc...!

Early reviews say it's an overlong, bloated, and sleep-inducing mess. Makes some sense given it's translating 100 pages of a 270 page novel, yet clocks in at over two and a half hours. Oh well.

Reminder:

Step 1: Watch the movie

Step 2: Comment

It's not science.

But where would the fun in that be? For die hard lotr fans speculation over The Hobbit has been going on for at least a year, and its most definitely not going to stop now! I'll be checking out of this thread for fear that your step 2 will ruin my experience. Really, for anyone who's into lotr it should be:

Step 1: Speculate for a year and read every article known to man on the subject.
Step 2: Go on Daves and express said excitement.
Step 3: Watch the movie.
Step 4: Comment. (But only on whether you liked it or not. No spoilers please!)

Well, your Step (1) greatly improves on Step (2), specifically regarding the "he made a small book into 9 hours of movies!" (not to forget the forthcoming, 12 hour extended edition) comments.

But I will enter the theatre as "nude" as possible, all I've done do far is watch 2 trailers. Currently I'm in an uncomfortable, "Ultima" like situation (fans may recognize this):

"Thou hast promised your friends to hold back on your desires and watch The Hobbit" together in Bangkok, on Tuesday 18th. Thou art in Manila now where the movie showeth today, willst thou:

A. Betray your friends and submit to your desires, by watching The Hobbit tonight, in 3D, at SM Mall IMAX in Mutinlupa, knowing that you can never tell your friends on Facebook until next week, or

B. Restrain yourself and forgo your deepest wishes, sacrificing the opportunity to see the movie early, thus honoring your commitment to your friends?"

Tough...

The sparkly vampires have to end, at least.

It was decent. There are things I would've changed about it, but it was really more of the same. If you liked LOTR, you'll like this. Great performance by Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman. Can't compare it to the book as I haven't read it.

One thing I didn't like about it were the constant "saved by the last minute" type scenes when the characters were in danger. Almost every action or suspense scene ended in that manner.
