lol, I think it says the guy in the middle is from a Korean language learning website, I expect he was grading his language down for their benefit. That would be pretty great after 3 months.

SeoulNate, I feel like we've discussed this before maybe, but it seems like maybe you've had a bad run interactions. With...maybe 80% of the classroom teachers I've had, they were excellent at grading their language and cadence appropriately, and the exceptions were high school students volunteering in a community centre. And every tutor I've had has been great at speaking at or just above my level since I specifically select them for that trait.

The average person on the street however, yes, I totally agree, they rarely grasp the notion of adjusting their language to accommodate less proficient speakers. Not to go all SR on this though, but I've seen loads of co-workers / foreigners do the same thing to Koreans. Say something to a random Korean and English and when it goes over their head, just repeat it the exact same way but louder. Good communication skills are universally not universal.

Their music video about learning Korean:

They explain why their no English rule enabled them to learn foreign languages much faster than usual in a TED Talk:

I think it would be difficult to attain fluency in a second language without some type of immersion experience.
