Did this article surprise you? It surprised me. I was surprised South Korea is #2 in the world for prostitution and not number one. Is there a flaw in the methodology? How did the researchers come up with these numbers?

Elsewhere, I read this:
Quote:
Korea is believed to provide the largest number of prostitutes to the United States, followed by Thailand, Peru and Mexico.

I saw this in the newspaper and was taken aback:

Quote:
Kim Kang-ja, a professor and a former senior police officer, has proposed that strictly-regulated brothels be set up in designated areas.

“There are members of society for whom it is difficult to find partners, such as the disabled, illegal immigrants and widowers. Society needs to address the needs of these individuals by allowing prostitution in restricted areas,” Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times.

I have very serious doubts about the Thailand number...should likely be far higher.

Really? It's almost .5%. That's pretty high. One of the highest rates in the world for sure.

In Venezuela it is legal, so it is more out in the open. (More easy to count and quantify I think.)

According to the article, 1.2% of people living there are prostitutes, compared to 1.1% of those living in South Korea. Statistically it's pretty close. It's not unreasonable to say Korea could be #1.

Okay, sorry. But in saying that, do they not take that kind of thing into consideration? So even if SK is not NO.1 it's up there Very Happy

I think it's a little distorted.

Korea should definitely be number 1.

So, you're basing your opinion on what...? Because you live in SK?

This map also shows Venezuela having more than SK: http://www.targetmap.com/viewer.aspx?reportId=10544

That map is uses the exact same figures as the link I posted, meaning they both got their numbers from the same source.

What surprised me is that someone would post an unsourced, unverifiable article and take it for gospel truth.

Except I didn't. I questioned it (which is the opposite). I said the article seems strange because it has Korea as #2 in the world for the amount of prostitutes per capita rather than #1.

The only thing I will accept as "gospel truth" is the prediction you will pop into every thread I make with an inane asinine comment pettily nitpicking something inconsequential in the boringest way possible.

There are few absolutes in life, but one can safely assume you, PatrickGHBusan, thegadfly, and creeper1 will be trolling Dave's for many years to come.

A 2012 report by the South Korean Ministry of Gender Equality said 21.7% of teens who have had sex had worked as prostitutes.
