"Research suggests the average adult waist size in the US increased by more than 1in (2.5cm) between 1999 and 2012. But figures for obesity as defined by body mass index (BMI) had changed little over the same period."

It's called central obesity, which is associated with metabolic syndrome. What it hints at is that MetS is getting worse (which we know is true), regardless of overall weight.

"Factors such as lack of sleep may be to blame for growing waistlines."

No.

"Try cutting down on the calories and getting more active."

No.

Fat people, and a size 40 is far more than plump, are extremely expensive.

It would help if the average prole was being fed reasonable diet and exercise advice. Lift, don't run. Eggs, not carbs. Etc. Too many interests involved for there to be a meaningful change. I read that Obama eats a low carb diet, meaning he understands how to stay thin, yet he's made no attempt to influence the 'food pyramid' and/or subsidy regime in a direction that might help average people.

Yeah he got in front of the whole nation and said "hey everyone eat Obama's My Plate". Funny.

Not 100% related, but interesting.

This is a link to a list of the top ten fattest countries. Interestingly, Arab countries are surprisingly fat. For the women, I guess it makes sense, because if no one can see your body there is no pressure to look a certain way, but I wonder why the men are fat. Is it just that they don't have to work, or being in the hot desert discourages outdoor activities, or what?

Not American, but I gather that Michelle Obama is focused on promoting diet and healthy lifestyles. And the Obama administration seems to have made moves as well, though I don't know if they specifically interact with the problematic elements you referenced.

I was pointing out their analysis was wrong.

Yeah, the Obama thing did appear to start out with good intentions, but then it came up against big industry. Industry brought their lawyers. "My Plate" and "Let's move" is watered down to meaninglessness.

I liked the hypothesis put forth in Missing Microbes: we've found that antibiotics cause animals to put on bulk more quickly, so we pump our animals full of antibiotics. Other places either don't do this or don't do it to the same degree. We then eat these antibiotic juiced animals and subsequently bulk up ourselves, in addition to taking antibiotics every time we get a cold because placebos make us feel better. Solution? Stop eating meat raised on factory farms. Here's the book:

The role microbes play in maintaining bodily health is interesting. I imagine this probably has at least some impact, and even if this theory weren't true at all, antibiotics need to be more strictly controlled and less utilized than they currently are anyway.

Thanks guys, this makes me feel better about my size 34 waist. I fit a 32 a few years ago and now I can't. I hope I can fit 32 again sometime soon.

To the gym!!

Ha, seriously. 40 inch waist is average? That's scary.

Yeah, that's definitely the case for Kuwait, Saudi, and the UAE. Qatar should be on the list too. I'm also guessing lots of carbs have to do with it. Egypt's national dish, kushari, is white rice and pasta mixed with tomato sauce and a couple other items. Great way to gain weight.

Same here. I work out for six months, get myself back down to a 32 and then I get lazy and go back to a 34 again. Anything that tastes good is bad for me, ten years ago this wasn't an issue.

Have to also remember that they are not measuring these on pant size, as that is not the measurement area. They measure an area slightly below your navel, which for most people is much larger than your pant size.

I dont think the average pant size is 40 :p
