This one kinda hits home hard for me, since he was pretty much my favorite actor of the generation who came into prominence in the last two decades.
He had a talent for playing either rather gruff, semi-macho characters(eg. Charlie Wilson's War), or stereotypically effeminate characters(eg. Capote). And very distinctive voice and appearance. With a lot of Hollywood actors, it's difficult to keep a definitive picture of them in your mind if you're seeing them for the first time(Tom Cruise, for example, does not really stand out among other guys of average height and brown hair), but you definitely remembered Hoffman.
Hard to pick a favorite role, so I guess I'll just go with Dickie in The Talented Mr. Ripley...
