So the recruiters I'm working with have told me that most hagwons are now only paying for flights one way to Korea instead of return.

Is this true or is he just trying to steer me into a bad job?

thanks Smile

It's true. I'm not sure when that started but it's a fact.

Most recruiters are dishonest. You cannot trust them at all. That being said, Korea is declining in terms of how good of a deal it is. It is barely worth coming anymore. Without a round trip ticket: not worth it.

It is a combination of both.

Some hagwon associations have suggested that their members no longer pay for return airfare. (largely because they don't have to. There are enough desperate grads still willing to come over to fill positions such that they can do it and still fill their recruitment requirements).

Employers who don't offer return airfare have in fact cut wages by about 100k per month (the value of the ticket home). If you do accept such a job then you should make sure that the base wage is in fact 100k more to cover that cut in wages.

Decent employers still offer airfare both ways.

I'd say some do but not most.

It's going to amount to the same thing if you stay in Korea. They only need to pay one way. If you are certain you need a return flight, then negotiate that accordingly with potential employers.

Question...

You know the 6 month thing where once you are 6 months into the contract you don't have to play for the flight?

Is the 6 month thing a rule or does the amount of time simply depend on the contract and the school in question?

I'm looking at a contract that says 8 months. Is that allowed?

Flights are a contractual issue and NOT a labor or immigration issue.
