As most people know, the Olympics were initially a pagan religious festival as much as a sporting event. They were designed to entertain the king of the gods, Zeus, who lived on top of Mt. Olympus. Hence, the olympics...
So, I have a few questions.
1. What's up with gods living on the top of mountains? Seems a pretty common theme in religion. Even YHWH hung out on top of Mt. Sinai. Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives. He was crucified on a hill. The Scientologists are obsessed with volcanoes. Tales of 'sacred mountains' etc.
2. Since the Olympics began as a pagan festival do some religious people, notably monotheists fearful of committing idolatry, boycott the olympics? I would imaginne some hard-core Islamic countries being uncomfortable with the whole thing, and not to mention Protestant conservatives. And given that the original games were only for men, and performed in the nude, they could be deemed as well, kind of gay. And yet I never hear of religiously-inspired boycotts of the olympics. I find this surprising given how some conservatives boycott Halloween for its pagan origins. Some small Christian sects even refuse to celebrate Christmas or Easter due to their pagan origins. But the olympics seem to get a free pass.
3. Does anyone worship the old gods anymore? Surely there must be a group of eccentrics who have their own meeting and pray to the old gods. I want to hang out with those dudes. |

That gave me a chuckle. That must be Putin's greatest nightmare. All of the male athletes marching into the stadium naked hugging each other. Maybe that's what he trying to prevent by banning gay propaganda in Russia. Someone probably told him, "Ya know Vlad old chap, these Olympics used to be kinda faggie. Naked men wrestling and all that. With the revival of traditional customs in post-Soviet Russia, what if the Greeks try to revive the old olympic traditions. We gotta do something man."
And that's probably how it began. |
