I was wondering how ESl folk on Daves approach the prospect of Korea doing well (or poorly) at the Olympics. Do you hope they do well? Or when you see a skater or skier lining up, all you see is your corrupt hogwan owner, your public school that ripped off your overtime, the guy who c/blocked you at the pub, and the xenophobes who came up with the E-2 visa regulations? Or do you just hope the best player wins in each event regardless of nationality?
Personally, all I hope for is that princess Kim Yuna falls on her face. Other than that, I'm content either way.
How 'bouts you? |

Don't care who does well or not. Winter sports in general are boring as shit anyway. I get irritated at the Kim Yuna worship that happens around this time but I usually avoid it by not watching TV. And lol figure skating being a "sport." |

The UK got its first medal ever for something on snow I think (3rd in snowboarding). Hoping to get another in the curling - or as someone called it -' housework on ice.' |

couldnt care less about results of the Olympics, I'll just enjoy watching it.
Being from the US, I think I will never understand how worked up the average Korean gets about worldwide sporting events. The general apathetic calm that most Americans have for the Olympics is what I always have been brought up with, but the attitude here is far different. I've been to the Olympics three times and I have never seen a group of people more rabid about their teams/athletes than Koreans. They seem to take every loss as some perceived slight and that if they dont win, some nefarious action was obviously taking place.
Hell, two nights ago I was at the bar with my gf watching the day one 5000m speed skating and there was so much hate being spewed when Lee Seung-hoon didnt win I was rather appalled.
With that said, I could care less about who wins and I wish Korea all the luck in the world, as I do with all of the participants. |

Yeah, I'm kind of hoping she doesn't medal. The way she fired her Canadian coach after winning the gold medal was indefensible. And the way she (and her mother) did it was just so Korean, showing absolutely no thought or consideration for anyone but themselves. Anyone who has been fired in Korea, or given the runabout about whether their contract will or will not be renewed, can relate to this story. Take six minutes and watch this interview with her coach after he was fired. He's the epitome of decency, but it sounds like Kim Yuna and her mother have all the moral fiber of your typical hogwan owner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vDvX5Xc_3I
As for the OP's question, I'm not ashamed to say I hope Korea does poorly. Happily they have failed to medal so far. |

The only hope I have for the olympics is that Jamaica gets a medal, other than that I don't care. |

Yeah I hope they do OK...though I haven't really been paying attention to it.
I'm looking forward to the World Cup though and will be pulling for them to advance as it's not looking good for my home countries of USA/Australia. |

Watching sports is stupid. I don't do it.
Do I hope Korea wins medals? No. If they do, it will make them more arrogant and cocky, and I'll have to hear about it. If they don't, I won't. |

Unless they feel they were cheated in some way. |

I'm just gonna put it out there.
Every poster in here talking about Kim Yuna more than likely doesn't even watch ice skating or follow it. Because we're probably all males and well, it's ice skating.
This fake outrage because she fired her coach makes you look like miserable shits stuck in a country you can't escape. Coach firings happen all the time, but because a Korean(!) did it, better run to Dave's and put them on blast. |

Sure sign its time to go home- If you are actively rooting for the country you live in, its time to go home.
I'm rooting for the USA in most events, especially Ice Dancing's Meryl Davis and Charlie White as they train in Detroit and they were amazing in the Team competition. I do want to see Yulia Lipnitskaia get the gold as she is simply phenomenal, and the Russian pair of Solbova and Klimov were fantastic.
Of course the Jamaican Bobsled team.

I strongly disagree. Figure skating requires a tremendous amount of physical training and athleticism. In fact it even compounds this by adding an artistic element into it.

Do any of you actually enjoy and care about figure skating? I'm no Yuna worshiper, but she is a superb skater and deserves every bit of credit she gets. A silver for her against Lipnitskaia would be a great capstone to her career even though Koreans will see it as a disappointment.

The same could be said of ballet. Is ballet a sport now? |

Yeah, bad coaches get fired. Coaches that get you a gold medal at the Olympics usually don't. And they certainly don't get dismissed the way Yuna and "Dear Mother" dismissed their foreign coach. Once he got the girl the gold medal he was quickly sacked in a disrespectful manner. When it comes to foreigners, Koreans can be shockingly unethical employers. We all know that. It's not a controversial statement. Daves is chock full of stories of unethical employers. Almost everyone you meet has a story. It's clearly a cultural trait that is not restricted to the ESL industry. It's embedded in the culture.
I hope she fails to medal, and whoever her former coach is coaching this year gets the gold. |

i hope they win everything, just so we don't have to hear how they were cheated for the next four years. my girlfriend is the sweetest, most rational girl in the world, but if i mention apollo ono's name, her eyes turn to flames. i don't think korea as a nation gets the fact that every country faces the same subjective judging and rule interpretation in international sports. not everyone is out to get them... |
