I told a recruiter that I wasn't happy with the contract they had given me, and that I wouldn't sign it unless they were to change it. Now the recruiter says that I can change it if I want. One of the things changed is the fact that I am referred to as an "instructor" and not an employee. Other things I want to change are the tax problems, in that they are taking a lot out of my wages for accomodation. I thaught that was free?

Does anyone have any advice in regards to what to change?

Is there anyway certain changes should be phrased?

Even if the employer does make changes, will he/she still be trustworthy?

one of the things I worry about, is that he might ask me to send out my visa documents along with the contract, but then request that I fill out a different contract, as a way of locking me into the job.

I have been in contact with an employee at the school, whos job I am supposed to be replacing. He is basically the one looking for a replacement, which I am a little confused by, as he is the employee. I have a funny feeling he is stuck in a renewable contract, in which he cant get out of unless he finds the replacement. The contract it self states that the employee has to do this. He has been telling me that it's a small hagmon that is very laid back. He seems to have enjoyed working there anyway, although he could be just trying to advertise the job.

With things like that (taxes and job status) you have to think that even if the changes are in the contract, is that a place you really want to work at?

If something seems fishy, then just walk away from it. No one here can tell you whether or not the place is honest. A former (not current) teacher from that school could probably give you some insight though.

As for accommodation, it's contractual. There is not official standard. Generally though the school simply finds a place and rents it for you. You don't pay them anything for it. You just pay your utilities like normal.

This alone would make me decline the offer. Finding a replacement is a nice thing to do, and if you can get one within a month, great. However, you are not the employer. You cannot stay in the country like the employer can to find a new teacher. In the end, the responsibility is with the school.

Cheers everyone. I didn't take it in the end.
However, when it comes to contracts that only have 1 or 2 faults (lets say for example 3.3% being taxed, and a lack of detail on work hours), would it not be worth it to take a chance on the school? (if they were to make the correct changes that is).

You are generalizing too much. The 3.3% issue and lack of detail on work hours are SPECIFIC things each INDIVIDUAL must consider. What you like might not be what I like. If you see a contract with 2 things you don't care about, then that might be a good contract for you. That doesn't mean another person may prefer a different one. To each their own.

Also, for clarification, details on work hours won't be in the contract. The most you can expect is a range. They might say 30 hours, but in the end only schedule 20-25 with office hours. Most of the time they want availability.

Your specific schedule will change month to month if not week to week depending on the school's needs. If they say 9am-9pm, that might seem like 12 hours, but actually they will probably schedule 9-5 or 1-9. Get a current schedule to have an idea of the way they schedule.

I don't know what that means. If they made the changes you requested, then you wouldn't be taking any chances other than them fulfilling what they agreed to do.
