Here in the forums posters frequently mention how easy it is to obtain a degree copy apostille. Well, my notary had no idea how to notarize a copy, and it ultimately led to wasted time and postage. So for the benefit of everyone who hasn't done this before, here are the official instructions sent by my Secretary of State. [ ] means you need to insert information (let's make this foolproof!).
1. Staple a paper on top of the degree copy that says "I, [person other than notary], hereby affirm that the attached reproduction of [document/degree description] is a true, correct, and complete photocopy of a document in my possession."
2. Sign after this statement while the notary is watching.
3. On the same paper, below that statement and signature, the notary should write or stamp:
State of [list state]
County of [list county]
Signed and attested before me on [date] by [name of person who signed above]
[Seal] [Signature of notary] [Notary expiration] |

When I brought my notarized degree in to submit it for the apostille, they had to check to make sure the notarry had been a notary when I graduated in 2010! Thankfully she had been but they couldn't answer me when I asked why that made a difference. They also wouldn't tell me what would have happened if she hadn't been. |
