Hi everyone,
I've heard from a few recruiters that most hagwons nowadays are requiring teachers to pay upwards of $900 security deposit (throughout first 3 months) to be returned at the end of the contract. I'm very skeptical of this as I don't want to run into any problems with my school and then be refused the security deposit.
I've also been hearing that many hagwons require teachers to pay for their airfare first, mostly because some teachers will try to get the free airfare to SK, and then never show up for the job. This also sucks.
Any way to avoid or negotiate out of this?
Thoughts? |

Yes.
Don't accept a contract with those clauses in it.
To quote an old adage, "A fool and their money are soon parted."

1. Under no circumstances would I ever accept a job that requires a security deposit.
2. In the days when I did take jobs while being overseas I would pay for my own ticket, but on condition that half of the cost was given to me on arrival and the other half upon completion of the contract. I would also keep possession of the ticket in the event that if something happened I could always leave. |

EPIK took 900k from us back in the day. Deposits seem par for the course. |

EPIK (a government backed body) isn't going to disappear with your deposit when the student enrollments fall.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pay a deposit to a hagwon unless you are willing to lose it for any number of dodgy and illegal reasons AND it is almost always a universally bad idea as well to pay for your own airfare if you are headed for a hagwon.
IF and ONLY IF you are going to a government job should you be willing to front your airfare and be willing to pay a deposit.
