...and now deep thoughts, by that idiot joelove...

When you consider, superficially even, even just a few things that go in the world, you'll see that human beings are nuts. You and I are not sane. Or maybe you are, what the hell do I know? If you are, well done, you are an exception. Most people are not, let's put it that way. If they were, why is there so much trouble? Why do we have so many struggles and difficulties? Oh, there are many reasons, you could say. I guess so. But let us say you have all your needs met regularly. What are your needs? Enough to eat, a place to stay, clothes to wear, maybe a few other things. Oh, you've got all that? Nice. Then what's the problem? There's no problem? Then why the hell have you read this far? I'm just trying to keep things light, but really this is a serious thing. I'm not sure it's even worth worrying about I suppose. Then why am I bothering? Why not just look after yourself and forget about the world, you freak, you can't do a thing about it all anyway.

But then you and I are not separate from the world, are we? We both live in it, though we may think we are separate, with our petty little lives, our silly beliefs and ideals, our stupid nationalism and religious propaganda. I can say these things, but am I free of them? Not at all, because I am also part of society, which is full of these things, and that society is no different than any other in this regard. So there's no separation between me and the world, and to see all the terrible things that go on is disturbing. But there are many terrible things that go on inside me as well. The fear and the envy of others that I compare myself with, the never-ending insecurity, and the many escapes and illusions as a way to try to find some security, the desire to achieve and become somebody, some crappy little self-important successful person, the frustration any time I don't get what I want, and on and on it goes. The anxiety of living, the fear of getting old, of not having security, whatever that is, and of course of dying or getting sick. Should I join the church to be saved from all this?

These things are felt by every person all over the world. Or maybe not you, the sane one. Or do you suppose it is sane to live with all these ugly things going on all the time? These things that corrupt us terribly and make us miserable, that make us fight each other and act like children though we may be halfway or more through our lives.

the idea of sanity is just a construct of the insane.

People are finally waking up for the first time ever in history. Nationalism and Religion are not going to last very long in the new digital world. Knowledge is being shared now more than ever in history, thanks to computers. We are living in truly exciting time, were we can be anywhere in the planet in 24 hours! Crime, war are lower than ever, and food production is higher than ever. It is an exciting time, don't despair too much.

The bad: economic disparity is getting worse in most countries.

From my perspective the exact opposite is the case. New conditions may be wearing away at ideologies like nationalism and religion, but they're being replaced with alternative ones which are equally unreal and similarly dysfunctional. Productive men with families to provide for losing their jobs over a quiet joke shared with a friends. 4th grade classrooms being mandated to learn about the "history of homosexuality." Fundamentalist egalitarian thought which directly conflicts with all available data. Promotion or hiring exams are deemed racist (and thus in violation of the law) if they fail to engineer an equal outcome, with no concern to the actual objective qualifications of the people involved. Gender identity narcissism demanding the entire world cater to the delicate ego of people probably best described as mentally ill. Some of the most powerful and influential women in the country getting together to make an advertisement about how we need to stop calling sassy young girls "bossy." Radical libertarians who are willing to undermine the society which has given them everything for the sake of a little quick cash or comfort. If that's waking up, it's waking up with a hangover and immediately vomitting on yourself before passing out again.

Yeah it's holding science back, doctoring IQ tests (and they ARE IQ tests), in favor of everyone being 'equal'. Everyone should be treated equally, but that does not mean that they are.

Living brings stress, but theres positive stress too. Challenges to be met.

Security is pure illusion. No point seeking it.

I've embraced getting old. Cant fight time. Death, the next adventure! But I'll jam in as much experience as I can in the interim.

Except death is not the next adventure. Death is the end. That's it. You're done. All you have is your children to carry on your legacy.

None of us know if death is the end. Yes, death is the end for our current "state", but who knows what happens afterward.

And no, I'm not religious and do not believe in God, nor heaven or hell.

So, Dave's discussion has finally degenerated into bemoaning our existential dilemmas. I suppose it was the next logical step. How long before someone burns it down while Dave dances and fiddles in circles around the flaming wreckage?

Funny, I thought it was an improvement from threads like "We win, you lose" and many others.

I wonder if you could say more about this. I'm not sure it is illusion just because it is sought in many ways that don't work out to give the seeker total security. Isn't that what most of us after, some sort of total security? Either here or in the hereafter.

You can settle on that conclusion if that makes you comfortable. I don't know. What we want, and I suppose this increases as we get older and more aware that time is getting shorter, is some comfort. Not just physical comfort, but psychological. And that's much more complex.
