Hi all,

I am working an afterschool job and the company's manager from the headquarters has hinted that they might be closing the program at the school I work at this semester. (It has something to do with my district supervisor mismanaging and low enrollment numbers.)
I am 3 months into my 1 year contract. Can they just say I no longer have a job?? They would have to give me a severance pay or official notice well in advance or something, right? My visa is with them, and they promised to pay me for one year. What does the law say about this?

Thanks in advance.

Labor law says that you can be released at any time without notice or cause during your probationary period.

Under law, your probationary period is the 1st 6 months of employment.

AFTER the 6 month mark they have to give you 30 days notice or 30 days pay in lieu. (article 26)

The "severance" is NOT required until you have worked a FULL calendar year (or more). 364 days and you are screwed.

IF they close down then you can easily transfer to a new employer or change to a D10 visa.

If they just fire you then you have problems.

labor standards act:
