I know it is a bit of an odd request/predicament but has anyone ever been in charge of finding placements for student-teachers before?

I'm working in a higher edu education program at a uni in Seoul and they have asked me to find placements for student teachers for observations during the upcoming fall term. They already go on group observations as part of their coursework to graduate from the program, these observations would be in addition to their regular work. The problem is that the uni has no system setup for these observations and have been petty much left to our department to deal with.

Short of calling schools/Hakwons and asking for placement, what other routes could I take?

I've already been turned down quite a few times which boggles my mind as the academy would be able to use our name for an affiliated partner, the teachers would be able to use our resources and it would give the academy first hand access to graduates from one of the better unis in Seoul to sell their name.

I don't need them to observe hundreds of hours of class, basically just looking for 5-10 hours or so, but the hostility I have gotten from a few places that I have asked seems quite strange.

Any ideas?

Honestly, the responses you are getting doesn't surprise me. Many academy owners are hesitant to allow 'on-lookers/observers' to come in and see what goes on in their place of business.

Because these observers will probably say and write a bunch of positive stuff about the school, how its run and so forth.

I have been on the presenting and observing side of that situation many times during my 5 year public school stint before I moved on to University work.

That is exactly the problem that we are having now. Our students have started to voice some concern over the fact that these lessons were obviously rehearsed. We just went for one of the observations last week and while the lesson was well planned and the material was good, it was taught in such a route-ALM based way that our students got nothing out of the visitation. Basically it sounded like the teacher was reading from a script (which she may well have memorized), and this was the NET we observed...

The staff that I work with would really like to be able to give the teachers a chance to follow around another teacher for a few hours and see what they do. Our current student base is about 30% current teachers (who would not do the observations as they are currently working in public schools), 20% Academy teachers either looking to change focus or better their teaching practices, and 50% non teachers looking to improve their skill set for the job market.
