Is it too late to get a China visa for August 9 or so? I'm American. From what I understand, I would have to get one at a travel agent. Is this true?

Also, in lieu of getting a China visa, I was considering flying China Eastern to Thailand or somewhere (haven't really decided). I know it is possible to get a transit visa for 72 hours, and I've found some flights on Kayak that involve a 24 hour layover but nothing on China Eastern's actual site. Could I book a multi-city flight through Kayak (say ICN-PVG-HKT) and still be eligible for the transit visa? I think I'd rather spend most of my 2 week vacation somewhere beachy but I'd love to check out Shanghai for a couple days along the way visa free if I could.

Hi,

I am in Shanghai right now. For us Americans, a visa is $250.!! You still have time to get one, I got one in 10 days. When I arrived there's a special line for the 72 hour visa. I don't know for sure but I am sure they just want you out in 72 hours, not where you are going etc.

Also if you come there's a "Cityline" bus that you can hop on and hop off where ever you want. It's only about $7. It's a great deal, it literally will take you everywhere.

Try to stay at a hotel on The Bund, that's where all the action is.

The pollution is bad! Just so you know.. have fun! We are loving it.

Hey thanks! That's really helpful. So if there is just a straight up 72 hour line, maybe I'll fly to Shangai for a couple days on my way to Thailand, and then fly back via Beijing to do the same. It would be awesome if I could check out both cities without having to get a visa!

You would be surprised. The money exchange counter would not let me turn my USD into Macau Patacas. Because Patacas are soooo valuable.

It's called a 72-Hour Visa-free transit.

On arrival at Beijing, Shanghai (Pudong or Hongqiao), Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing you can receive one if you meet the following conditions.

1. You must be from one of the countries on the list.

2. You must have a ticket to a 3rd country that departs within 72 hours of landing. This is important - it does not apply to return ticket travelers. For example, you can fly Seoul - Shanghai - Bangkok, but not Seoul -Shanghai - Seoul.

3. There will a be a sign posted in the airport telling you what line to get into if you are using this option.

4. You must be able to show them a copy of your ticket that clearly shows when your departing flight is. No ticket - no entry.
