I have what seems like another silly question. It's about sentences like the following:
We consider the situation from our own unique viewpoint.
Scientists decide based on their own point of view.
There seem to be loads of examples on Google where "our own" and "their own" are followed by a singular form. However, since this is not an issue of shared ownership, aren't the plural forms grammatically correct? I would think they should be:
We consider the situation from our own unique viewpoints.
Scientists decide based on their own points of view.
Could someone please let me know which set is correct?
And... is it different if it's followed by a tangible object?
They have their own bike. (Does this mean they have a single bike that they share?)
They have their own bikes. (Does this mean they each have a bike?)
Thank you for any comments. |
