I had no idea that Western modernity is all thanks to Eastern Confucianism! I'm so thankful to the KoreaTimes and Seo Jeong-key, 76, newly-elected director of Sungkyunkwan, Korea’s Confucian academy which has over 600 years of history!

Thank you for correcting my total misconception!

'Western modernity owes much to Confucianism'

Some of the individual points he raises (the British civil service being influenced by Chinese thought and practice, Voltaire evidently admiring Confucius) are valid, but he grossly over-extrapolates from them. It's fair enough to say that China (not really Korea) and Chinese Confucian thought influenced the West to at least some small extent, but "opened up the way for Western modernism?" More than dubious.

Seo also plans to have over 10 million Confucians registered with Sungkyunkwan actively participate in real politics to build the ideal world of Confucianism.

Also... SKKU =/= Confucian school...

Is the Korean Times secretly the English/Korean/English version of the Onion? At times I think so..

If this is his attempt at gaining more adherents to one of the most backwards, un-enlightened, and sexist/bigoted philosophies out there by making it seem more important and 'Western' than it could ever possibly be, good luck to him.

I prefer my whackos REALLY whack, ala jihadis and evangelists. Embarassed
