I want to know what everyone's opinion is on this.....
It's been said that there is a chance of all after school programs being forced to close in September. Will it happen, or is this just political talk before an election? What do you think and why? |

Well, duh. September is four months and a half months away. Companies (only concerned with money, obviously) are trying to milk them for all they can before they are shut down. They hire waegs now for year contracts now and then come September, "Oh, well we don't need you anymore. Hey it's not our fault; it's the government's fault. See you later." (The Western teachers will most likely be let go with little to no warning.) |

This person makes it sound like it's not exactly going away, but rather, they are just blocking any attempts to start an official English curriculum early.

| Hmm. Elementary is 1st-6th grade. Buy eliminating 1st and 2nd grade, that means 33% of potential students are gone. So probably not all after school jobs are going away, but they will take a big hit. (Less students = less jobs.) |

My opinion is that these gigs were going to be short lived when they started becoming popular a couple (or maybe 3) years ago. |

1st and 2nd graders make up 40% of the enrollment more or less. AS will not be able to function financially if they block them from joining (seriously, that sounds very nazi-esque, and what caused the dynamic shift from obsessively learning English to such a hatred for it (money? paid off by the hagwon association?))
I told on eof the mothers about this and she had a strong shock on her face, and said we wont let this happen! She meant the mothers would protest it. I agree. What about the low income families who can't afford to send Su-bin to a hagwon. Are they just out of luck?
This whole scenario screams corruption and PGH is a little c***. She is a horrible president (when it comes to English education.)
I emailed my supervisor and told her about this upcoming law. And she said yes, she has heard of it, but she is not going to worry until she heard from the MOE.
I wouldn't worry until then either. But I'll be damned to work at a hagwon again. No way. |

You're right Lucas, I am lucky. I have the mobility and flexibility that isn't offered to the E2's. I can pick up and leave seamlessly whenever I want. I am not under the control of any hagwon boss. It's great. |

| Notes that it doesn't say first and second graders cannot be taught, it says that they cannot be provided with an advanced start on the curriculum in a class subject format. It sounds like a class where the teacher makes the materials and just does fun stuff for vocabulary enrichment and conversational practice will still be fine. I assume that after school program providers will try to adapt to the new, vague guidelines rather than giving up their business models. |

Pff who cares what visa you have. I got my F5 last year and guess what I'm going to give it up. Why? Because I went back home and got a job that pays more than a damn doctor makes.
KOrea's washed up. And gambling your whole life on that country is a bad investment. |

No way is Korea washed up, theres still a ton of money and opportunity here for someone with a decent skill set, even sometimes, not. Now that English is so inundated in K-education, theres tons of kids and adults falling by the wayside. They need English edu too.
As long as the money and the need is still there, its still ripe for the pickin.
I dont have anything beyond a B.A., Id like a Celta or Masters sometimes, but Im working too much, no time. I figure the result is what i want so why do I need all that.
I do all kinds of weird stuff (overtime). Im now teaching some obscure European test that theres not much material on. I basically translate various situations that one guy in the group who took the test and failed, he tells on the various situations he expereinced and I translate them into English (well, I have decent Korean skills, so thats one benefit). Its a nice bit of overtime for my boss and me.
No, not washed up. Saying washed up is giving up. No, I like business.
I also cared for my future, so Im not too worried about that. Oh and I have a E2.
I should get a F visa I guess, but Im not too worried about that.
Im looking at steady not a big bank.
and thats just in Korea.
No, I dont like it when ppl whine Korea is this or that. |
