I would like to see the methodology behind this research..... they followed more than 1000 people around. I bet the 'drug takers' were academics who had an agenda and the people who 'didn't take drugs' were selected at random.

Hasn't there also been at least one study that found dumber people are happier people? Same idea I'd imagine. No need to drown out the misery of the world with drugs if you're too thick comprehend how profoundly unfair life really is.

For the record I haven't used any illegal drugs in the last year. I must not be as smart as I'd thought. Laughing

Alcoholism also correlates with high IQ.

One possible contributing factor (admittedly a small one):

Smart people make more money on average, have fewer children (expenses) and therefore have a larger disposable income with which to buy drugs and alcohol.

Depression also correlates with a high IQ, as it does with drug-taking. Not much of a coincidence really.

Is that what you think happens in studies published in peer reviewed journals? Rolling Eyes

The data come from the 1970 British Cohort Study, which has been following thousands of people over decades.

The study appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

You know what's stupid? Confusing correlation and causation.

Can you be more specific?

For someone so anti-drug, have you actually ever used any?

Correlation is a statistical measurement of the relationship between two variables. Possible correlations range from +1 to 1. A zero correlation indicates that there is no relationship between the variables. A correlation of 1 indicates a perfect negative correlation, meaning that as one variable goes up, the other goes down. A correlation of +1 indicates a perfect positive correlation, meaning that both variables move in the same direction together.

causation:
1.The action of causing something.
2.The relationship between cause and effect; causality.

IQ and drug use may have a positive correlation, but to say that having a high IQ causes people to use drugs is another thing entirely.

The media loves headlines that confuse correlation and causation. Many people are unfamiliar with statistics and the scientific method and may be ignorant of this difference, but if you explain it to them, they will understand it rather quickly.

Ignorant ain't stupid.

My uncle was labeled with a genius IQ back in school.

He's now an alcoholic and substance abuse user. I don't even know what he does for money.

I asked him once why he chose this path and he claimed that the substances were the only way he could fit in with society.

It's sad because I feel he wasted his potential, but he says he's happy with his life. Who am I to judge him then?

But I believe he self medicates himself to either dumb-down, control or manage his gift.

And he's not the only genius who does this.

But is he smart because he uses drugs? Are only smart people drug users?

Drugs don't cause either of those. They were smart before they used drugs in the first place....

How am I anti-drug? I support legalization of pot. I think the drug wars are ridiculous. I support NORML. I've read Jack Herer's Emperor and agree with much of what it has to say.

I just object to the idea that drugs makes you smarter or that people are better off if they do drugs. Unfortunately there are a lot of poor drug people who spout off this nonsense.

Drugs are good for some people, they are not good for others.

And as I have said. Per the terms of my employment I officially declare that I have never done drugs. However my good friend Steelheart can roll a joint with one hand while driving and attended the Hash Bash event back in his hometown.

But yeah, there are a lot of dumb people who do drugs and can't think straight.

I've meet to many great human beings who have never done drugs to buy into the nonsense that doing drugs makes you a better person or makes you smarter. Rubbish.

WTF? Where did I say in that post that drugs made you smarter?

Basically I said that perhaps people with high IQs use the drugs because of the reasons I beleive my uncle uses them.
