I don't mean that as a diss and I know that both countries are powerful with great dynamic economies, however, they are not really the shining city upon a hill type of country that inspires the world.

And nobody is going to make you come visit or live in the US or Australia. It would be nice that those that look down upon the US could escape its hegemony though. What a trip that would be. Laughing Perhaps the hegemony of the Caliphate or maybe China. China would find Canadian Maple syrup quite tasty and the prices would be unbelievably low too. Laughing

Do not be so thin-skinned. He's said (at least twice) that he's not bashing Australia or the United States so much as he is commending Canada and New Zealand.

Why the hell is America so damned racist?

Not racist. (Obama was elected twice.)

Americans have dramatically changed their views on same-sex marriage and whether marijuana should be legal, with the majorities now supporting both policies.

Previous Pew Center research also found that young people tend to be more tolerant than older generations.

Americans are becoming more and more liberal, progressive, and open minded.

Hmm. On paper it's really high, but because there are so many loopholes, it's really not (overall). But not really low either.

In the graphs of that article, one measure shows 2.1% for the U.S. vs. 2.5% for Canada, while the other is 13.4% vs. 14.5%. Not vastly different, in fact, pretty close. The difference is the U.S. economy is about ten times as big so they are getting way more corporate tax money.

Canada's probably not a bad place to live, but neither is the U.S., so (some) Canadians should stop claiming that it is.

Canada transistioned away from Socialism when it kicked Trudeau or at least his successor to the curb. When his pet Chretien became Prime Minister he quickly realized the sands were shifting and as a shrewd politician shifted with them. Many changes that started gradually in the 1980's, accelerated in the 1990's and the 2000's. By the time the new Conservative party came to power in 2006, under Stephen Harper, much of the country had already changed and had become a more conservative country. Chretien cut the budget far more than Harper ever did. Chretien cut taxes more than Harper did. Though Trudeau II may try to change these things or he may not. He seems to be a guy trying to have things both ways.

Anyways, the steriotype of Canada being a quasi socialist state have long since passed. Our taxes and business regulations are comparable to the US and in some cases less. The only real difference is that provinces have far more autonomy than US States do with education, health care, and many areas of the economy.

That said, Canada is quite expensive like the North East US and California. It's quite the BS actually. Many things are quite expensive, from housing to Big Mac Combos which will set you back almost 10 bucks whence taxes are factored in. They were close to 6 when I first came to Korea. (Of course many provicnes raised the minimum wage quickly to 10 bucks an hour and drove inflation in the process. I think it was 7.50 when I left for Korea?)

Yes, yes, American foreign policy is a horror-show. Canadians like yourself are also supremely obnoxious when you go on about it in this way (i.e. as pissing contest rather than substantive criticism or through sincere policy discussion). Remember that there are more Americans just as virulently opposed to American foreign policy than there are Canadians in Canada.

As an American opposed to American foreign policy, I'm very surprised at how poorly informed Canadians are about their own foreign policies.

For years, I have read about Canadian soldiers getting smoked in Afghanistan and a Canadian was killed in Iraq just the other day. Canada has been meddling in Iraq since the early 1990s. Also, Canadian armed forces attacked and killed a lot of Libyans, paving the way for Libya's takeover by Islamic militias, as if any of that was any of Canada's (or the USA's) business.

In 2003, Canada hosted a conference to decide the overthrow of Haiti's government. Canada invited Americans but didn't invite Haitians.

Likewise, the treatment of aboriginal peoples has been and continues to be disgraceful both in the USA and Canada. It's mostly white people in the USA and Canada who talk about how well their countries have treated other groups of people.
