Tonight starting at about 11PM/midnight I hear this scratching noise in my wall (ceiling)
I live in the 3rd floor of an apartment and the attic/storage room in above me so that's not good news.
It was only scratching, no chirping (not likely a bird) and no meowing (not likely a cat) and no clicking noise (not likely roaches) so I'm guessing it's rats or mice. They hunt at night so it is perfect timing for them.
Whatever it was, when I banged on the wall it stopped for a while and then continued. It was scratching in the same place on and off for about 2 hours and then scratched in another spot for a little bit. I put duct tape all around where it was scratching just so I could check later if the tape was damaged as a way of knowing if anything came in. After that it scratched in anotehr spot and then stopped. It crossed my mind that MAYBE the tape blocked the smell of some food that it was smelling and it gave up. But if it's rats they will almost definitely be back.
Knock on wood.....It's 2AM and no noises for about an hour.
Tonight is the first time I heard this noise.
Any personal experiences????
I've heard of many roach problems in Korea, roaches I am willing to buy poison for and stick it out with but rats or mice and I will likely be looking to move to a new place.
I'm going to get in contact with my landlord tomorrow and let him know that he may have something in his attic.
Any personal experiences/tips are appreciated.
Thanks in advance. |

I wouldn't assume it's rats, but it does sound like mice. I've lived with them before and I'd hear the same sorts of scratching noises.
First I'd make sure there are no entry points into your apartment. Seal them up. Then perhaps plug in one of those devices that emits a high pitched noise to keep them away. Alternatively if you know someone with a cat you could borrow that for a while to get its smell into your place
I'm sorry to hear this anyway. I've got a really bad phobia of mice and rats and can't stand to be around them
One other thing though, where I am now on a couple of occasions about two years ago I heard scuttling in my ceiling, which I felt pretty sure was mice, but that stopped after a few days and I've never heard it since or seen any evidence of rodents. You might just get lucky and discover it's a one off thing. |

It'll be rats/mice - at this time of year they build nests - you’ll soon be having little baby mice/rats in the roof too!
Hopefully you kill it before it has them; otherwise the poor little babies will starve to death, unless some kind ESL teacher rips the roof open and adopts them!
Also the decay will stink if the babies get to a half decent size.
Sticky traps work well.
A humain way to get rid of it is to play Gangnam style on full blast for 3-4 hours, every day. |

Scratching= mice.
Be pretty big roaches if they can make scratching noises.
It could also be nesting birds or pigeons. In which case just leave them be.
Live and let live. |
