|

Hey guys. I just finished up a video and article on going to a baseball game at the Hanbat stadium in Daejeon: http://ninjateacher.com/korean-baseball-nightlife/
It was my first time going to a live baseball game and I loved it.
What's the best stadium to go to watch a game?
The Hanbat stadium was cool but I've heard there are far better ones. |

The stadium in Daejeon is pretty good. The one in Daegu is the worst, in my opinion. Just old, bad sight lines, smelly and not many amenities.
The best place to watch a game is probably Jamsil just because it's so huge and really rocks, especially on the weekends. Busan's Sajik stadium is technically bigger but when I went there I didn't find it as loud and fun. I don't know, I've been to Jamsil dozens of times and Busan only twice, so maybe it's the sample size.
I also enjoyed the new stadium in Masan. It had a very AAA baseball feel to it, and their uniforms are quite sharp too. Oh, and Incheon is great also. Most improved has to go to Mokdong which used to be kind of dumpy but got a nice update a couple of years ago.
Anyway, I would encourage everyone to get out to some games in as many cities as possible over the spring/fall. The summer can be unbearably hot and humid, even in the evening. But still lots of fun! |

Senor Negro Gato speaks the truth here.
Sajik rocks if you're a Lotte fan, otherwise its hohum. If you ARE a Lotte fan, I'd encourage you to sit in the visiting section at another stadium like Jamsil or Mokdong. One of the best times I had was in Jamsil in the Lotte section against Doosan. Completely different atmosphere compared to other fans. LG, Doosan, NC, Samsung...all their fans were nice and happy and cheerful. Lotte's fans were screaming constant profanities, drunk, wishing death on the other team, and being the most obnoxious kind of homer possible, which was kind of refreshing compared to sanitized cheerleading routines and happy smiles. Nice to hear a couple of chicks cuss like sailors for 3 hours right next to a family of 4.

NCSoft stadium in Masan the ultimate toilet (unless they've built a new one). Busan Giants used to host a few games there.
Busan stadium is loud as hell. I went there once and sat in front of the chearleaders and their damn loudspeakers. Pure hell. |

Jamsil is decent and as Steelrails said, going as a Lotte fan is great. Even if you can't get into the away section, try the outfield as near as possible to the Lotte fans. As with most stadiums they'll let you bring in whatever you want so stock up beforehand.
Munhak (SK) is a nice stadium, nice amenities and has some great seats for cheap.
The old KIA Tigers stadium was a dump but the fans were pretty fun. Not sure if it's this year or next for the new stadium.
Mokdong has improved a lot but the prices are still too high. I think it was minimum of 17,000 each for the unreserved seats.
Sajik is mecca for Lotte fans like myself. Loud as hell and great on a sunny day when it's packed.
Haven't visited the others yet. Will be interesting to see if the dome in Guro ever gets completed and who'll play there. Students told me yesterday that Suwon will get a team next season. |

Agree with the comment about Daegu. The old stadium is crap, and not deserving of a Samsung team that wins the series more often than not.
That said however, a new home for the Samsung team is being built as we speak not far away from the Daegu World Cup stadium. That will be awesome because it will be right beside a subway station, and I am expecting a much improved ballpark from that nearly ancient downtown facility. |

LOL at Korean professional baseball. Ive never seen so many balls go through players' legs, over the heads, goofy errors in all my life. It's like an American single A team out there--actually single A may be better than Korean pros. |

My wife and I are big Lions fans and having been to their stadium I know
what you guys mean about it's decrepit stadium. Personally though, I like
it for that very fact. Old school Korean stadium with it's concrete seats,
semi unpleasant smells, limited access to refreshments and restrooms...
well, I leave that to the imagination.
Still, I liken it to a U.S. stadium of the Babe Ruth era. But replace the hotdogs
and crakerjacks with chicken and beer. A more youthful vibe with a devout
set of spectators equally comparable to the States and more than any other
sport in Korea I assume.
I'm rather saddened to hear of a new stadium being built with it's over-priced
tickets and over saturation of corporate sponsorship and the prices of the
chicken and beer that come with it.
Samsung is the team to beat specially with the trashing they just gave top
ranked Nexen Heros, but once they move to a new stadium...I fear an end
of the Samsung dynasty! ha~ And KBO is a rather 'quirky' pro ball league
and yesterday they had the most amazing and entertaining play against
the LG Twins (those poor chaps) that I find KBO far more entertaining than
MLB and more memorable.
We will easily fork over the 'man wons' to see as many games as we can here
in Daegu before the big move and love every moment of it! I encourage
other to do the same! |

It ain't the majors, but it ain't A ball. It's inbetween AA and AAA, with teams like SK in its heydey playing at a 4A level. You see it in the foreign players with MLB experience. They put up the same solid AA-AAA numbers that they did back home. They all have experience in the show, but none of them were able to stick. They put up promotion-worthy numbers here in the KBO. But we know they can't stick
Either way, its baseball. Even a guy who hit .260 in the show would hit .330 here. Basically 30 more singles over the course of a season. That's baseball. Even the best are out over half the time.
The pitching and hitting is AAA, the defense is AA or at times, worse. Downgrade those levels a notch for the bottom half teams. It's really hard to place Korean baseball. One game you watch and its 4A level. The next its like you said and its High-A level and you're reaching for your beer. I just evaluate the individual players and not the teams or the league.
While I want them to expand to promote the game, they are really on the verge of serious talent dilution. At least they're opening it up to more foreign players to make up the difference. As it stands, 8 teams is what they can support domestically at a decent (okay, tolerable) level. Now, with Suwon due, they're at 10 which requires foreign talent. I kinda wish it were 12, with a team in Jeonju and a team in another city, but they'd really have to open it up to AAA American/Latin/Taiwanese/Japanese players. I do wish they'd bring back the 'Asian Series' or whatever with Japan and Taiwan.
Bottom line, when it comes to KBO, the way to enjoy the game is to enjoy the game. Scream at the boneheaded fielding errors you see, but in the end, innings 7 8 and 9 in a one-run game are innings 7 8 and 9 in a one-run game, no matter what the league.
With my students, they are all about hitting, just as Korea produces good strikers but poor defenders in football (soccer). They need to follow the SK model and realize that pitching, defense, and baserunning win ball games.
In the end, I love Korean baseball for this simple fact- BYOB and cheap tickets and its a better game than the awful crap that is Korean soccer. At least with Korean baseball you get the rhythm of baseball. You don't get that with Korean soccer and the rhythm of soccer.
And let's not even mention Korean basketball. What a waste of time. I'd rather watching Fishing TV. |

Go for it, man~ Take a pal or two or a sweetheart (or two! and deal with
the consequences later). The game itself may be entertaining, but go with the flow of the spectators and be exhilorated at a win or feel defeated at a loss. It's all good fun or at least a true experience at the cost less than a night spent at the local bars. |

Pro baseball is about going to the games. Let them have their fun. When they go back to the states they can root for their "forever" teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Dodgers, Indians, Reds, and then the Rangers, and the Dodgers. |

Yeah, theyre so bad they won the gold medal in the Olympics a few years back. They beat the Cubans. The US didn't take that gold medal. |

Well, to defend Speck7 here, there's a big difference between the national team and the Korean league top to bottom. The national team could certainly eek out something like a 78-84 record in the MLB or better. Not too shabby. But a random team like Hanhwa would struggle to win 44 games. |
