My School just asked me to sign a strange Contract Termination Letter. Take a look at this please.

My current contract ends on June 20, 2014. That is the end date written on my contract. I told the school that I won’t be renewing for next year. The school now is asking me to sign a letter that says:

Quote from letter -- -- --
Please be notified that the current contract you have with … will be terminated as of June 20th , 2014. Please complete the information below with your signature and return a copy of this letter to me.
End of quote from letter -- -- --

It is strange that they want me to sign a contract termination letter, when it is for the same date as my contract already ends.
My immediate concern is that my current ARC expires one month after the end of the contract (July 20). I am worried that this “contract termination letter” may somehow get filed with immigration and change my ARC date to June 20 (like the contract was terminated early).

Note – Just talked to the school office and they say that the Contract Termination Letter is not sent to immigration. It is just kept on file with the school to prove that the contract was not renewed in case a teacher returns and claims to still be working there.

Anyone have experience needing to sign a “contract termination letter” when the contract is successful completed already? Any idea what the immigration or ARC ramifications of this might be?

Thanks,

I have never been asked to sign one.
It is a non-issue insofar as immigration is concerned (might actually facilitate moving to a new job (like a LOR)).

It DOES however have an impact at Labor should you later decide to make an issue for "unjust termination" of employment. It would invalidate such a claim; you both acknowledged that employment would terminate at a fixed date (even if the job continues).

Not so much of an issue for E2 employees since the visa issues come into play. Could be significant for F visa holders who may not necessarily wish to terminate.

I would be more concerned with some bullshit scam that makes you finish one day early and not be given your plane ticket or severance because you didn't finish your entire contract. Why not change the date to 1 day after your intended end date.

What day did you officially start work at that school? First day of actual work (with a visa).

It was a short contract, Early Feb to June 20. No severance, no plane ticket.

I singed the letter for them. It was just for their files, I can keep my ARC until July 20 so all is well.

In that case, I wouldn't worry about it.

I hope it didn't set off the smoke detector.
