unless you land a job making serious money when you return!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/comment/talking-politics/only-rich-fall-love-cameron-britain-115946600.html

"The Migration Advisory Committee did the sums and announced this morning that the salary would need to be somewhere between 18,700 and 25,700. It will almost certainly be accepted and implemented. That means half the working population of Britain are about to lose the right to fall in love with someone overseas and bring them home to live together. Only the rich can fall in love on holiday. Only the rich are allowed to live with the person they love. The poor must be apart, or leave their own country"

I guess the move is aimed at asian community that regularly import wives.
However this move has big implications for those Brits with K-wives or husbands.

I really don't think an ESLer is going to be on money of between $18,700 or 25,000 any time soon. Laughing

Better get used to being a lifer and seeing those bland apartment buildings for the rest of your lives. Smile

Is 25,000 pounds a year considered a lot of money or a difficult salary to get in the UK? $18,700 is a very low wage in the US and easily obtainable.

18,000 pounds is not a high salary. In fact, that would be considered a low-end starting salary for a graduate fresh out of university. If you can't expect to earn more than that, you shouldn't be thinking of taking your wife--who you will probably have to financially support--back to the UK.

Serious money? At the lowest end of the scale that is less than 9 an hour. 2 people couldn't live in the UK on that salary (depending on the city they were in) so I have no problem with it.

If 18,000 is such a low salary why are you over in Korea making 14,000?

ESLers (who in the vast majority of cases have nothing to offer employers in their own country) would be luck to make 6 an hour.

Say they work full time 37.5 hours.

Therefore 37.5 x 6 = 225

To get yearly salary 225 x 52 = 11,700

That as you can see is far less than 18,000

Cost of living. In the UK you spend what you earn on basic living costs until you hit the 30,000 + wage mark, and even then you get taxed so heavily that you don't make much extra. In Korea you can save much more than in the UK.

It's a good thing that I have absolutely no desire to go back to the UK. When I graduated almost 10 years ago, I had a standard office desk job in a small firm and I was paid 15,000 per year, which was quite bad even then.
Surely, with the rate of inflation etc, 20,000 per year must be at the lower end of the scale.

Just another reason to not go back to Rip-off Britain.........or Broken Britain........or whatever you want to call it to describe how it's going to hell in a handbasket.

The UK only really offers 'The Good Life' to those households earning over 50,000 per year. Then you can live in a nice neighborhood, shop at Sainsburys, and send your kids to nice schools.......

........for the rest of us it means living in Chavland, shopping at Iceland and sending your kids to schools where they learn more bad than good.

No thanks.....I'm staying put......oh, and BTW, some of us ESLer's earn a lot more than 14,000 quid a year!!

There are hardly any jobs in the UK now. Unemployment is at a record 17 year high. Before, your average supermarket and grocery shop consisted of pensioners and students behind the tills; now its graduates. The government is looking more and more towards internships, apprenticeships and subsidising small employers in order to take on more workers. Alot of the jobs on the market are temporary or part-time: viz-a-viz minimising the amount of pay and benefits the employee is entitled to and making positions accessible to foreign residents.

The job market cannot sustain the population; what with spiralling immigration, poor fiscal debt, national debt at 104% of GDP, banks not able to lend money thus small and medium sized business are stagnating, a broken society (as witnessed during the England riots) and a shrinking economy to boot the UK is doomed. Whats more, if countries like India start caling in the government bonds they own it will get even worse.

What gets me is all this 'graduate starting salary of 25,000' as if you just sign your name and get the ball rolling. Sorry, it doesn't work like that anymore. Practically everyone I know started at the bottom of the ladder and that is not 25,000 let me tell you. The country is morally, financially and socially bankrupt: Cameron knows it, everyone knows it and as a result people are only out for themselves in the UK.

I can't wait to return to Korea.

If you're a man you should not get married before you're 35 and at that age you better make a lot more than these limits.

Unfortunately, from a continental European perspective, the UK appears to have become a country of marginal income earners where you can only get by on a double income. I have a sister living in Scotland and at times I have the impression that she's living in a pre-90's Poland with internet.

Of all the people I've met overseas, the English seem to be the ones most happy not to be home anymore.

Parts of the country are comparable to Eastern Europe. High unemployment, violent crimes, lack of education, no life chances, almost no social mobility, racial tension, drug and alcohol problems, teenage pregnancy etc. I read an article comparing Glasgow to the former Soviet Bloc states and there are many parallels.

This global "restructuring" has much wider implications than international marriages. Married Brits in Korea, most of whom will be men, probably hadn't planned on returning anyway.

I'm getting tired of these deluded comments about ESL'ers being losers and they should be making $100,000 at home and thinking about retiring.

Anyone I know who's making allot of money also has allot of debt. People I know are suffering with negative equity, and even with their high wages, they cannot really make ends meet, and they're not making more money every year, they're making less money every year, and it's a very common theme.

I don't make allot of money, but I have money and it's my money. Anything I saved, I own. I'm fiscally stable.

You can compare people to countries. My brother is like a big industrialized European country. He makes plenty of money as does his wife, but they're indebted.
I'm like Chile (negligible debt - no debt in my case) though I'm not rich or powerful. I have a clean credit history. I have several years of experience in the IT field (despite the naysayers reminder that that experience is now defunct) which gives me some degree of confidence that I can re-enter that field.

I know I wouldn't trade places. But each to their own as they say..

Meh. Troll / flamer OP attempt.

1. Did 2 yrs in SK then went to London and walked into a job unrelated to my degree payin 23k gbp per year. That was 7 yrs ago.

Your average media sales / recruiting gig in the city pays the minimal figure you quoted at the entry level or in some cases at least after a year.

Not that difficult to earn for someone with a BA and is presentabl and knows hoto sell themselves. I am confident I could be earning more than 18.5k within 6 months of moving to the UK if I left tomorrow, reccession or not. More likely around 23k gbp.

2. You ask if 18k gbp is easy to get (it is for someone without a BA even)why are some of us brits woking in SK?

I'll take you back to school for a second. Seems you need it.

I still can save more on 2.4mil a month in SK than I could on 23k gbp per yr in the UK. Of course, you're being disengenus (and you know it) by not including 400k per month on top for rent, 2.4mil per yr (1,200 gbp)bonus. That puts your elser on 2.9mil a month, which is 1,500 gbp per month or 18k gbp per year and with with lower costs of living, 20% less tax and much cheaper utilities.

Troll baiter defeated. Thread done. Cheers. Wink
