|
|
Former North Korean teachers now living in the South believe teaching methods in South Korea are more creative and experience-oriented than the North, but are surprised at a lack of respect from South Korean students.
The findings were detailed in a report released yesterday by the Korean Educational Development Institute [KEDI] following a number of in-depth interviews with experienced North Korean teachers who have since defected to the South.
“North Korean education focuses on rote learning,” one former biology teacher was quoted as saying. “In South Korea, it’s okay to be wrong, and this develops the creative abilities of the students.”
Another former Korean language teacher commented, “I’ve come to realize that most students can understand something if they see it up close, rather than just hearing about it or looking at pictures.”

My students there were nothing close to creative. They were stiff when it came to doing something that wasn't black-and-white. Even dancing was all completely synchronized and robotic. Completely removed the art from something that is supposed to have artistic merit. |

This is all relative. I'm sure that compared to the educational system in a military dictatorship, just about any country's educational system will seem creative but lacking in discipline.
Could you imagine what would happen to a student in North Korea if he ddong chimmed his teacher? |

My guess is that he'd be denounced for stealing fertilizer.
Old propaganda cartoon: a young boy is brought to the 'People's Court' and is accused of being an 'enemy of the state' and a 'Traitor to the revolution'. His crime? He wet his bed and thus wasted materials for gunpowder production. |
