Has anyone had this procedure done here? If so,
How long was your hospital stay?
How much did it cost?
Did the national health insurance take care of some it?
What kind of pain am I in for?
Thanks |

30 minutes at the Doctor's office. Walk in, walk out.
Minimal pain. The greatest amount of pain was the needle to freeze it (like a freezing at the dentist).
No sex for a week and use birth control for the 1st month to make sure there aren't any swimmers getting through.
It wasn't expensive (<100k) and I can't remember if NHIC covered any of it (probably did but was cheap either way).

I had one in February of 2013. I was in and out in around a half hour, went to work, and taught classes that afternoon and evening. It cost around 300,000 won and national health insurance didn't cover it because Korea is trying to get its birthrate up and because it's an elective procedure. The pain isn't that bad, but when you lay on your back for a while, it sucks to stand up. You'll want to stay horizontal, on your back, as often as possible. Athletic supporters cost a king's ransom here, as if they're made of 24 karat gold, so I wore one or two extra pairs of underwear for additional support instead.
I'm single and live alone, so before the surgery, I put all types of food, drinks and snacks next to the bed...things that didn't have to be cooked, so I wouldn't have to stand up as much. Oh, and a piss bottle to reduce the number of trips to the bathroom. After three days, you'll feel significantly better, or at least I did.
If you're wanting to have it done soon, you may want to circle June 5th on your calendar because the 6th through the 8th is a three day weekend. I didn't take off work, since I hadn't missed a day of work in 25 years until I had an appendectomy last May and didn't want to start getting soft, no pun intended. You can tough it out and teach if your boss is good, but if your boss sucks and has been cutting corners on your pay, just take a day or two off plus the weekend. |

I went to the Seoul Clinic in Bundang. The doctor who performed the operation came in to the office a couple of times per week. He was a urologist and NOT a GP.
There are a couple of different ways it can be done.
ASK which one they do. The one where they use the hemostat rather than a scalpel is less invasive and also less pain with minimal bruising and a short recovery time.
Worst case, you lay down and watch TV or play video games for a weekend.
(procedure Friday afternoon and return to work on Monday with no-one the wiser).
I don't see that the answers are "worlds apart" other than the price.
Pain is minimal but not "0". Same with the discomfort. It is no worse than skinning your knee (in spite of where it is).
If price is a significant factor to you then DON'T go to an "international" clinic at a hospital. You pay a lot more for the privilege of the "name". The doctors are the same as the "regular" side of the hospital.
Of significant note here: if you are younger and/or unmarried/never married they are unlikely to perform the procedure.
Over 40 and have kids already... snip, tuck and done.

Tom is correct about the inflated prices at "International" clinics and hospitals. You are just paying for brand name with no real difference in procedure. |

I was four months away from my 37th birthday and single with no children when I had my vasectomy, but the doctor did seem very hesitant, shaking his head and saying things like, "I just don't understand!"
You'll definitely want to do the semen sample at the 90 day mark, because that tests for a technical failure, which sometimes happens. You hear a lot of stories about guys getting vasectomies done and still fathering a child. Those guys really need to get a paternity test, but apparently a lot of guys don't do their follow-up semen test at the 90 day mark when sometimes the sperm count would indicate a surgical failure. I think a poster on here did a follow-up and the surgery failed and he had to have it done yet again. It happens. |

Thanks for the heads up on the 90 day test. I'm planning to do this in August. I'm 45 and divorced with no kids and no plans for any, so I don't think I will have to deal with any flak about my choice. |
