A piece from the Korea Herald suggests that Korea's compassionate cuture, or 'Jeong', is to blame for the Sewol disaster.

Quote:
Analysts say that “compassionate” officials in charge of the social safety system tend to overlook minor violations of safety rules upon emotional pleas of the offenders despite the risk of the offenses leading to a deadly safety fiasco.

No, it's that the government is too cheap to enforce their laws. But let's look for something else to blame; preferably something that is cheap.

Jeong is in practice often a lack of consequences for improper actions. It's a part of what leads to corruption and laziness in Korea.

It's all changing now though, don't worry. By presidential order, our students are now no longer allowed to use the monkey bars. Because kids having fun on a playground is what sank that ship.
