Any expert advice on teaching TOEIC Listening and Reading comprehension to beginner level Business English students? It's an evening class, and the company is hoping for 600 TOEIC scores (They better do their homework...). Wink

Along with the core curriculum, I want to build a good rapport and teach them fun side-subjects to always keep them actively engaged and motivated.

There are YouTube videos that go in-depth in terms of overall content and what materials are covered, yet I need to zone in on the videos that actually show a teacher how to specifically teach the lessons I mentioned above. TOEIC teaching tips websites and advice from one's own personal experience can also be very helpful.

Thanks again. Cool

600 is pretty easy, just get any half decent book and follow it.

Go to kyobo and look around to see what you like.

This

Also, if they are true beginners, half the battle will just be familiarizing them with the test. Give them 2-3 real (past) sections to practice with every week (for HW, dont waste your class time on it).

Keep track of their progress and attend to the areas where they are making mistakes.

Make them keep a vocabulary notebook as well.

Every time they read or hear a new word they should do something like this in their notebook:

1. Write down the new word (with part of speech)
2. Write down the meaning of the word
3. Write down the closest Korean word/phrase
4. Make a new sentence with the word in English

The notebooks are laborious, but they will help the students retain the vocabulary that gets used over and over on these tests. Also, make sure that they check them once a week for errors. Often they will translate incorrectly or fail to do the work.

2 issues....

1) teaching comprehension
2) teaching test prep.

They are NOT the same.

For #1 you need to look at basic literacy skills and vocabulary building.

#2 is self evident (buy a test prep book) and teach HOW to take the test and strategies for passing
- things like:

a) listen to the passage then try to answer the questions - trying to listen and answer at the same time on the test will result in missing Q2 every time. There are no repeats.

b) skim/scan on the reading portion - the passages are TOO LONG to read your way through then try to answer the questions. You run out of time.

(yea, I did take the actual test so I speak from experience).

.

I'll look into the test prep books and follow your advice while preparing myself through YouTube videos and online website tips from the experts.

If there are any more helpful tips, please keep them coming. Smile
