I'm in a strange situation and I would like to know if anybody else had similar experiences. I was recently terminated at a hagwon due to the fact that the hagwon shut down. As soon as I found out, I contacted my recruiter and told him I'm back in the job pool, the recruiter told me that he would help me but I would need to get a letter of release. Thats all fine and good, but then my hagwon director arranged for me to meet another Hagwon owner who recently lost a foreign teacher. I was immediately hired due to the fact that I'm already here in Korea and now they don't have to pay a recruiter fee or an airplane ticket. I want to tell my recruiter but I'm afraid that he might be salty at losing revenue and maybe hiring foreigners without going through a reputable agency is illegal. Also, my recruiter has my criminal background check so if I demand that they send it to me will they be forced to comply? I also don't know how my visa is going to work or how I'm going to transfer my current visa to the other hagwon. |

Aside from the first job I got in Korea, I have gotten all other jobs through word of mouth or Facebook. As far as the CBC, you are probably going to have to apply for another one... |

I can definitely tell you that hiring a foreigner without a recruiter is not illegal. I've never used one in my life.
I would also tell you not to worry about the recruiter, they are in it to make money, it's a business, it's not personal. You aren't their friend, you are their paycheck.....big difference.
Anyways, glad to see you landed on your feet. |

If you were working on an E2 then immigration has your CBC and not the recruiter.
It is a non-issue finding work on your own without him. You are fine.
You DO need a letter from your previous boss to allow you to transfer your visa to your new employer AND you DO need to transfer to the new employer at immigration or you will be in trouble with immigration.

This is one of those things that I need to know. I live in Anseong at the moment. Where is the closest immigration office to where I live? Also, how do I transfer my visa when i receive the letter of Release? |

Ask your employer to accompany/take you to immigration.
You have 14 days from your last day of work with your previous employer before you get a black mark in your immigration file and complicate the transfer.
You will need:
passport
ARC
LOR
new contract
new employer's business registration (copy)
new employer's guarantee (sponsorship form).
application form
fees.

Assuming you have your E2 visa and ARC already, and since you have a new job that your former boss helped arrange, you don't need the recruiter for anything. You never have to contact him again. He helped you get your first job and you no longer have any reason to bother with him.
You should be able to get a letter of release from your former boss, especially since he is helping you. But since your old school is closing down you could get that requirment waved if you can't get an LOR. Your documents are on file, so with the LOR you can transfer your visa to the new school. No problem. No recruiter.
If you like the new job, don't bother to contact the old recruiter; except as a courtesy you could send a polite note, after you finish your transfer, to thank him for his consideration and to let him know you found a job. (No point burning bridges needlessly.) |
