So... this is not a big deal |

Given how easy it is to get a reocrd here with libel, assualts, etc, I can sort of understand it. But, why would they refuse to hire English teachers with minor records then? Seems hypocritical. |

We're talking about the Korea Times here folks. Take this claim with a grain of salt. |

Because we're foreigners and they can control our inflow. But honestly, would you want a Korean with a 'minor' record, on a working visa in your country? |

Funny, I actually think it's easier to get a record in the West than here. So many crimes can go away with a small amount of money here. |

Not to mention most of the offenses are essentially related to protesting and wouldn't be shocked if it was essentially 1988ers than actual recent offense. |

Good point. Virtually every Korean that were University students between 1960-1990 was involved in some kind of protest. If you wonder why the cops are very very soft these days, a huge part is because during those 30 years the riot squad would literally crack skulls and throw you in jail just for walking in the vicinity of a protest. The late-70's and 80's were the heyday of the most violent Korean protests.
If you're curious just google Korean Riot Police. |

But my students were telling me that Lee Myung-Bak, (the previous president of the Republic of Korea), now has a conviction and is in prison
Is that true? I did not check up. But if true it would show the hypocrisy of someone who used to bang on and on about foreign teachers with convictions and bogus qualifications. It was his government that added the CRC check and apostilles. If we want to teach in Korea we are penalized as much for minor unimportant offences as for serious ones. |

LMB was caught up in several scandals, but he's not in prison as far as I know. |

I wouldn't allow any K-males into my country, they break every law of hygiene, etiquette and common decency.
At very least they would have to undergo a forced training programme, covering things like how to flush a toilet after you, why not to constantly pick your nose in public..and so on.
Every encounter with a Korean male leaves me wanting to take a bath. |

Protesting seemed to be a gateway to a career in Korean politics at one time. I wouldn't make too much of it. |

He has friends in the upper place (the court). You can do whatever you want in this tiny Asian country as long as you personally know a high-profile judge. Even rape. |
