I'm not really a sports fan, and I don't really care about the World Cup, but I hate corruption and I hate bullies. I also heartily dislike massive, powerful companies that feel no social responsibility to their public. Big food, big tobacco, big oil and the rest of it. One of the reasons I lost interest in sports many years ago was the role of money, the banks and big corporations. The salaries also offend me. Why does someone deserve several million dollars a year for kicking a ball about? It's madness.
It now seems that FIFA is as bad as the oil, tobacco and junk food conglomerates. As John Oliver says (in the attached link) FIFA is evil. Brazil, a third world country, won't benefit from hosting the world cup. ALL of the profits go to FIFA. No wonder there are massive protests against the games.
No better than the banks. Watch this and cringe.

The corporation is a legal entity, not being human it cannot experience a feeling of responsibility. |

yep one of the most clever bits of legislation corporations invented to skirt any and all responsibility to which the clueless masses didn't even attempt to stop. |
But they complain endlessly about the results born of this legislation, even though they are still not able to trace back and understand where the hell it all went wrong. |

The world's 2nd largest economy is still a 3rd world county... China. And there is India, another huge economy.
Anyways, if you ever go to Brazil, you'll very much consider it a 3rd world country. Although not as bad as India, the poverty is very very noticeable. Their per capital numbers look like a country on the verge of being part of the first world, but their is a huge separation between the haves and have-nots.
Also, I'm surprised that Chile is considered by some to be a 1st world country. Anyone here been there? What is it like on the ground? |

I knew some Korean-Chileans. They said it was alright. Not like the US, but not the dirt hole people might think it is. They weren't living in terror or afraid to drink the water. I had a Costa Rican friend who made it a point that Costa Rica is worlds apart from say, Guatemala. |

Lol, Chile is a middle income country. It's similar to Turkey and probably in better shape than a couple EU countries (*cough* Romania, Bulgaria *cough*). Actually I don't know how Romania and Bulgaria are now, but when I met travelers in Turkey who had come through those two countries, they all said what dumps they were compared to Turkey.
And Guatemala makes Mexico look wealthy, it's all relative. |

| The big news on my Facebook feed is about 250'000 poor Brazilians being evicted for the World Cup. I don't know if it's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. It wouldn't be the first time a huge sporting event wrecked economies and destroyed lives. |

Sep Blatter is a horrible and corrupt slime-ball who is seemingly above reproach. He is like the Idi Amin of international sport.
It seems that such odious values have spread throughout the sport. The money involved in football has corrupted it. I grew up loving the game, but now I couldn't give a shit.
What really turned me off football was the recent events in Qatar. 1,000 workers dead already. Football has officially lost all its humanity. Beautiful game, my hairy bollocks. |

Third world just refers to a countries alliance during the cold war.
First world = USA and western Europe
Second world = USSR and the Communist bloc
Third world = Non-aligned
Brazil qualifies

I had interesting experience with a Filipino guy in Vietnam. While drinking in Saigon in front of my hostel, one of the guys at my table, a Filipino says, "Is it poor like this all over Vietnam. This is the poorest country I've ever seen."
I say, "This is probably the nicest it gets here."
And I'm wondering if this guy is actually from the Philippines, maybe he's one of those rich Filipinos who stays close to one of those gated communities... |

Romania is no longer poor. It's considered a tiger-economy. Turkey is a nice place benefitting from a near century of stability.
Chile is no longer the destitute of Pinochet days.
Argentina is about to default on their national debt.
Costa Rica benefits from not having an army.
Yes, Vietnam is a poor country, but they don't care. They beat USA in war and won the right to say "no" to 'heroic materialism'.
Soccer is traditionally a poorman's game. it doesn't belong to the first world. |
