I-m looking for a place to live on a more permanent basis than a hotel. I found a place in Sillim dong. http://seoul.craigslist.co.kr/apa/1598783806.html

Is it safe to live in this area? I-ve searched here on the forum, but have found little about Sillim dong, Wikipedia says it-s a bit of a red light area, but Wikipedia isn-t always correct?

Anyone know about this area?

Firstly, i have yet to be to a place in Korea that I would say is unsafe to live in. 2nd Sillim-dong is not overall seedy, but there are places around sillim station that are. But even around the station it's just sections. Also it's not a open rld like Yongsan's for instance. It's more just hotels, kiss bangs, and anmas from what I can tell. Still I'd also prefer not to live next to those places.

I would check the place out and make sure it's not surrounded by hotels, but otherwise i think sillim station is pretty nice. Has every chain, lots of shops and food and people. Quite convenient too.

If you're female and living alone I might want to think it over for a second. Sillim is pretty seedy (for Korea) and the ajeossis in that area are in abundance, underemployed, and very stress.

Also please understand that silim-dong is large. I live in silim-dong and take a 15 minute bus ride to the sillim subway.

I-m a female, will be living alone for a bit, but then my husband will be coming. Good thing is that I-ve lived in 7 countries alone, so that doesn-t bother me. And I-m a boring person, So I-ll home before dark and be reading in my room rather than hitting the bars.

The contract is until Aug 17th, then honestly, we-d like to move somewhere closer to my work. And bigger so when we have kids we can put the baby in the living room. AS it is now, I-ve told my husband that if they baby cries, the only place we could put it is the bathroom

Sillim is no more seedy than anywhere else. The 'red light' area consists of about 4 lit up windows with girls. I lived near Sillim for quite a while before I ever even noticed it.

The good points are being relatively close to Boramae Park. You can get there by bus in probably 5-10 mins. Also, weekends near the station are crowded with Korean youth, lots of drinking establishments and a generally fun atmosphere. There is Sundae-Town, which Koreans say is the best sundae in Seoul. Mario has decent clothes shopping and a movie theater. Lastly, there's a bookstore that has a small but sufficient English section. This is all right around the station. Like another poster said, Sillim is large.

If that's close enough to your workplace, and you're looking for something temporary until your husband comes, it might be the ticket for you.

What does the restroom look like? It DOES have it's own restroom, right?

Not sure which campus of the university you mentioned earlier you are working at, but if it's the Seoul campus, then consider this:

Sadang station is on the light-blue line, and is a good area where two big subway lines meet (light blue and green). I know that if you worked at the Seoul Sungyungwan campus, it would be a straight shot on the blue line to work in 30 mins or so.

My boyfriend lives in Sillim-dong (just next to Sillim station) so I hang out around there quite a bit. The area is a pretty typical Seoul neighbourhood. Lots of restaurants, small clothing stores, Korean-style bars. There's a movie theatre. Podo mall has some nice stores and a few good restaurants on the top floors. Also, someone mentioned that Boramae Park is nearby, which is a nice place to walk around or chill out.

I don't think it's seedy...at least not around Sillim Station. There are a few kiss bars and whatnot, but it's mostly young people hanging around since it's close to Seoul National University.
