|
|
I-m looking for a place to live on a more permanent basis than a hotel. I found a place in Sillim dong. http://seoul.craigslist.co.kr/apa/1598783806.html
Is it safe to live in this area? I-ve searched here on the forum, but have found little about Sillim dong, Wikipedia says it-s a bit of a red light area, but Wikipedia isn-t always correct?
Anyone know about this area? |

Firstly, i have yet to be to a place in Korea that I would say is unsafe to live in. 2nd Sillim-dong is not overall seedy, but there are places around sillim station that are. But even around the station it's just sections. Also it's not a open rld like Yongsan's for instance. It's more just hotels, kiss bangs, and anmas from what I can tell. Still I'd also prefer not to live next to those places.
I would check the place out and make sure it's not surrounded by hotels, but otherwise i think sillim station is pretty nice. Has every chain, lots of shops and food and people. Quite convenient too. |

If you're female and living alone I might want to think it over for a second. Sillim is pretty seedy (for Korea) and the ajeossis in that area are in abundance, underemployed, and very stress. |

Also please understand that silim-dong is large. I live in silim-dong and take a 15 minute bus ride to the sillim subway. |

I-m a female, will be living alone for a bit, but then my husband will be coming. Good thing is that I-ve lived in 7 countries alone, so that doesn-t bother me. And I-m a boring person, So I-ll home before dark and be reading in my room rather than hitting the bars.
The contract is until Aug 17th, then honestly, we-d like to move somewhere closer to my work. And bigger so when we have kids we can put the baby in the living room. AS it is now, I-ve told my husband that if they baby cries, the only place we could put it is the bathroom |

What-s an open "rld"?
So I guess it's a bit seedier than most places. I dont- know exactly where this apt is. I-m still waiting for the address.
Sillim seems a bit more sexed up than other places, but as far as crime, etc goes, I should be safe, right? |

Sillim is no more seedy than anywhere else. The 'red light' area consists of about 4 lit up windows with girls. I lived near Sillim for quite a while before I ever even noticed it.
The good points are being relatively close to Boramae Park. You can get there by bus in probably 5-10 mins. Also, weekends near the station are crowded with Korean youth, lots of drinking establishments and a generally fun atmosphere. There is Sundae-Town, which Koreans say is the best sundae in Seoul. Mario has decent clothes shopping and a movie theater. Lastly, there's a bookstore that has a small but sufficient English section. This is all right around the station. Like another poster said, Sillim is large. |

If that's close enough to your workplace, and you're looking for something temporary until your husband comes, it might be the ticket for you.
It looks like a very small studio pillbox.
What does the restroom look like? It DOES have it's own restroom, right? |

Becuase my mom-s computer has an English setting and not a Spanish one and I-m not used to it.
Sillim sounds great. I-ll probably only be there a bit, until August. Since my job is in Suwon.
bass, yep, has a toilet. It IS a little place. I don-t care though. It-ll do until I get the 5mil won together for a deposit. It only has as single bed, which has a probably.
My husband wants to come in April as a tourist. Part of me thinks it would be better if he came in May or June as a resident. Last thing I need is for immigrations to say that he's missing a doc and has to get someone in Peru to get it for him. We already found out that in order to get a res visa he needs a judicial and criminal background check, just becuase he's from Peru. Now I-m not sure if that-s just the Korean Emb in Peru that requires it, OR, ALL peruvians need that.
I-ll be at the Suwon campus of SKKU. Thanks bass, I-ll check out the links.
One problem is that I don-t have 5mil won to put down as key money. Which is why this place looks very good. |

My boyfriend lives in Sillim-dong (just next to Sillim station) so I hang out around there quite a bit. The area is a pretty typical Seoul neighbourhood. Lots of restaurants, small clothing stores, Korean-style bars. There's a movie theatre. Podo mall has some nice stores and a few good restaurants on the top floors. Also, someone mentioned that Boramae Park is nearby, which is a nice place to walk around or chill out.
I don't think it's seedy...at least not around Sillim Station. There are a few kiss bars and whatnot, but it's mostly young people hanging around since it's close to Seoul National University. |

It's because of this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sillim-dong
A few years ago, the neighborhood was suddenly flooded with talking bars, massage parlors and other (sex-related) shops," said a student who asked to remain anonymous, having lived in the area from 2000-2007.
"The examinees generally became more affluent than the previous generation and even those who were not were easily influenced by the decadence."
He explained that Shillim-dong is now known by many as a place to enjoy easy and cheap sexual entertainment and that some even come from far away to visit the neighborhood for such reasons. |

When you're on your mum's keyboard, probably best not to type the ' as it's extremely distracting. |
