I have been offered a job in Jeju and I can either take the housing they provide, or 350,000 won for rent. What kind of place can I get for 350,000? Is it a huge hassle to get your own place? And if so is it worth the hassle? |

Rent / renting is not the issue.
Do you have $10k for a deposit and are you willing to sign a 2 year lease (better hope the job is good and you don't need to move in 3 months)?
Take what they offer until you figure out which way is up.

If you are only planning on staying a year, then take the housing that is provided. Since you are living in Jeju I would never have my own housing on an E-2 visa even if i stayed longer than a year. The job prospects for another job in the future there are way lower in my opinion. |

In the contract it says they will provide housing allowance and a deposit. Are all places 2 year leases? |

If you're in the country, and have time to spend finding somewhere, plus are okay paying for your own accommodation while you're looking, finding your own place is a viable option.
If you're not in Korea, I'd recommend taking your school's accommodation, it's a lot less hassle for you if you are new to Korea and don't speak Korean. It's going to be extremely difficult for you to find your own accommodation from outside the country, and the last thing you want is to arrive here with nowhere to stay.
When I first came here, I took school provided accommodation. My boyfriend came to work at my school part-way through my contract, and my apartment was big enough for two so we stayed put. When I renewed my contract I then took housing allowance and we found a place of our own. It wasn't that difficult, but it did take a few weeks to find somewhere and get moved in.
Edit - I can't speak for Jeju (I live in Songdo), but our lease is one year. |
