Alrighty then, I've searched EFL-Law and such but have had no joy so far.

So my boss has paid for the visa run airfare, but doesn't want to pay for the cost of the visa (6,000 yen) or the travel costs associated (like 3,000 yen).

Clearly this isn't breaking the bank, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the institute has to pay for the whole visa run which includes the costs of the actual visa.

Now were only talking about maybe 100,000 won here, but I want my employer to appreciated that I'm not an idiot, and if I let this slide without a fight he might think I'm a soft touch.

Anyone know if he has to pay?
Thanks.

I've ever had a school pick up the costs of a visa, wether I got in Japan or my home country. In your case though, you might try gently reminding him that he didn't pay for the airfare to get you here.

The employer is legally required to make sure that you have a visa. However, this doesn't mean that the employer is required to pay for it. Most employers do because that's what the market demands.

How much do you want this job? If you really want it, then just pay those costs. If you want it but would be happy elsewhere, then explain to the employer that you can easily find a hagwon that will pay for all of the visa costs. Gently remind him that you're still cheaper than bringing somebody over from North America.

Ah thought so. Actually I did haggle with him so that he'd pay for 50% of the costs incured. He didn't say a definate "Yes" to paying (he's not Big Boss, but 2nd in command, thus doesn't have his hand on the cheque book) but we'll see soon.

I just wanted to check that he wan't pulling a fast one.

I'm still a little nervous as a newbie and don't want to start on a slippery slope of trouble. I've already had to compromise on getting this job anyhow - the school doesn't pay for return airfare, so don't want to get stumped any more.

I'll quickly defend the lack of return airfare payment as I know some posters love to jump on people who budge an inch in contract negotiation. I flew out on a single ticket and found the job myself. Everything about the job seems good (honest boss, 6 happy foreign teachers, 2.05 million pay, teaching adults, good accomodation, very professional looking institute) and as a total newbie (no teaching experience + non-N.American accent) I felt I could could live with losing out on the airfare to get this job.

I'd rather have a good job/boss etc with no airfare, than vice versa.

I'm gonna get called stupid in 5... 4... 3...

The school only has to pay for the visa if it is in your contract that the school pays for the visa.

if your school paid for your airfare over to korea, i think they're being totally fair, but if they didn't pay for the airfare over to korea.........you're being jipped big time Sad

My school paid neither my flight over nor the non-flight costs of the visa run, but the fact that I'm satisfied overall with the school kept me in check. Paying for all of the visa run definitely isn't a requirement, but it's up to you how much you pursue support from them. I personally have other priorities on my mind, like getting very specific vacation time.

Each school is different. Mine gave me a whack of cash and plane ticket.

I even in the end return money. In the end I garnered they would pay plane ticket, hotel, visa costs, food and transportation. All others like partying and clothes is up to you.

Some schools they will give plane and hotel. Others just a plane ticket.

I think fair is plane ticket, visa fee, and fair to middlen hotel/food allowance. The rest up to you.
Good luck on your trip!

Skippy

That's my thoughts too - I like that I've got a good job and willing to bend a bit to accomodate that.

Skippy - Happy Tree Friends rocks - I had a HTF party before I left the UK and we watched both DVDs back to back. It warped my tiny little mind - perfect preparation for teaching in Korea I think Wink

my school gave me 200,000 for my visa run, and told me to enjoy my day in Osaka! I used the extra 100 to buy an outfit at the gap!

I'm a farker it is true. It's scary how "farkisms" get into your mind.

All those who have no idea what I'm on about, visit www.fark.com and you'll get the idea. Have fun.
