Ok, lets be honest Dave's search function is terrible. You have to wait in between searches so I'm just going to ask.

My pay day is June 10th, my ARC card won't arrive til the 14th. My work says they cannot pay me until they have my ARC number. Is this true?

Is there an office I can contact to talk to something about this, or my issues not getting paid? Is there like a work bureau or something I can threaten my boss with?

http://www.moel.go.kr/english/main.jsp
or call the labor board at 1350.

labor standards act:
www.moel.go.kr/english/download_eng.jsp?type=&file=(31)LABORSTANDARDSACT_2012.pdf

Article 43 (Payment of Wages)
(1) Payment of wages shall be directly made in full to worker
in cash;
however, if otherwise stipulated by Acts and subordinate statutes or by a collective agreement, wages may
partially be deducted or may be paid by other than cash.
(2) Wages shall be paid at least once per month on a fixed
day;
however, this shall not apply to extraordinary wages,
allowances, or any other similar payment or those wages
provided for by the Presidential Decree.

DO BE AWARE that the labor board will NOT get involved if the wages are not 14 days late (or more) - meaning 44 days from commencement of employment to payday.

You can definitely be paid before your ARC arrives. My boss took my boyfriend to apply for his ARC, then straight to the bank to open a bank account. Our pay day was 2 days before the ARC arrived, and he was paid in full. He did have to go back to the bank with his ARC to set up online banking and to use his card as a travel card, but that aside he was able to use his bank card normally.

Let's see.

You just started a new job.

You might have to wait 4 days for the first pay.

But, let's just jump to (threaten my boss).

Yes, you are sure to win employee of the month, maybe the year!!!!!!!!!

Always be sure to get off to a great start.

You don't have to have an ARC nor a bank account to be paid. Your school can pay you in cash. Some teachers never get a Korean bank account (a bit nuts maybe, but they don't trust banks) and even they can get paid every month with that funny stuff called Cash. Your boss has no excuse not to pay you.

It is true that it's more difficult to set up a bank account with no ARC, some banks won't do it; and some employers are very reluctant to pay with cash, they always do bank transfers. Korea doesn't have personal checking, it's banned by the government, so cash or transfer, but one way or the other your boss has to pay you.

Including this problem with your other problems (in your other threads) ... it's really time to consider quitting this school. How you quit and what you do next is what you may want to consider.

If they don't pay you by the 10th of June for your April workdays, since you started on April 21, and all of May, you should quit. Why work if you're not being paid. You shouldn't make threats, however, as that will just make your boss angry, put him on his guard, make matters worse and possibly he will take action against you first. Don't threaten; make plans and take action.

You can go to the Labor Office and file a complaint, so they can demand that your employer pay you. (The rule is not as stated above, the Labor Office will take action when your pay is 14 days late based on the monthly contract payment date. You should have been paid on May 10th, so after May 24th your pay was two weeks late. They could have helped you any time since then.) Once you do this, of course, you should expect that your job is history. But from what you've written about your hours, not being paid on May 10th, and now the possiblity of not being paid on June 10th ... Leaving this job is not a loss. You will be better off after you get out of it.

For me, there's no way I would have given them even two weeks beyond May 10 - that was the scheduled payday that they've just ignored, and now they said you'll get nothing on June 10th because you have no ARC yet!

... If they don't pay you on June 10th you should be prepared to take your next step. But don't wait till then, make your plans now. If there's no money on the 10th you should move out of their housing and not be working on the 11th.

You can definitely get paid without an ARC. Even Wonderland does that, even though they do steal a significant portion of the first month's pay. It sounds like your hagwon may be even worse than Wonderland, if that's possible.

You might as well just quit right now, since you're obviously not going to get paid.

Blacklist this school.

Yeah, they told me it would be 30 days for my first pay, then they said 50, and now they are saying possibly longer than 50 days. I've been stuck with an entire semester of marking for an entire elementary school (because the last teacehr didn't) and I do all the grading for 3 Korean teachers as well as my own.

Why don't you take your sarcastic stupid comments and get out of this thread. TY.

Also, if I stop showing up for work, how long can I stay in their housing? How long do I have til I have to leave the country?

If you stop showing up for work and it's obvious that you're not going to work then they'll likely fire you. They'll report this to immigration and you'll have 14 days to leave the country (or 30 if you ask for an extension).

How long you can stay in the apartment... That's an interesting question. Legally you can stay there for a VERY long time because Korea has some strong tenant laws that make it a long procedure to evict someone. The owner would have to give you notice that rent is overdue. That would go on for a few months. The owner would eventually have to go to court to get approval to evict you. Without that, it would be illegal to just boot you out. BUT.... that's on paper. In reality he'd just wait until you left the apartment (e.g. to go shopping) and then come in and change the locks. You'd probably come home to find all your stuff on the curb or in a dumpster. Then the onus would be on YOU to try to take them to court over this matter (while at the same time trying to find a new place to live). If you had a friend staying with you then you could take turns making sure that someone was always in the apartment in case the landlord came around.
But it's a moot point because immigration would boot you out of the country as soon as you'd overstayed your visa.
