This town is nuts with tourists today.
Ever since the Sewol fiasco & the mass cancellations of school field trips, we've been swarmed with Seoul & Gyeonggi families on outings, but this extended weekend is extreme. Downtown is bustling. Sokcho Beach is packed. Too bad last week's 30+ temps didnt stick around but folks are still camping & playing like its august.
Tons of foreigners too, in numbers I've ever seen here before. The usual pale plump sunbathers & downtown strollers plus a few. At Emart this afternoon several tour buses disgorged hundreds of blonde Swedish children into the store, that was surreal.
Guessing the expressway back to Seoul tomorrow will be a total jam. But Sokcho does have its charms, worth experiencing. Try to choose an off-weekend. |

I had Thursday off so we already left for Gangwon-do on Wednesday and returned to Seoul on Friday evening. I gave myself a pat on the back for this foreseeing plan when I saw what the highway looked like on the way back. Though the weather was crap for 2 days but still had a good time. |

Sokcho is great. I would live there if it were possible for the family.
Got this year's visit in on the first weekend after the New Year. Climbed to Daecheongbong in light snow. Sauna at Osaek. Tried fried shrimp alley (ok) and that place in the main market that always has a line--a pastry, can't remember the name. And of course fresh raw fish next to the ocean. The Chuncheon expressway makes the trip very fast. I do not envy this weekend's vacationers though, that highway home tomorrow. |

Mr Schwa, I simply do not believe this happened! Are you sure your imagination is not running away with you in your last year in that fine town? Man, I miss it. |

Quite true. All girls between maybe 10 & 15. Not sure they were Swedish but they were definitely speaking some Scandinavian language. I kick myself for not asking what they were up to, I was simply too astonished. |

No offence, but I think you're a little too old for them! Just because something is legal, don't make it right! |

How did you know they were "definitely speaking some Scandinavian language"? Heard enough Icelandic/Danish/Norwegian/Swedish to know what it sounds like, but not enough to know which actual language it is? How does that work? |

Um, yeah, just like the Slavic languages have a distinct rhythm/tone to them, the northern European languages, do, too (tho like the previous poster I couldn't distinguish them, except perhaps German). Think Swedish chef on the Muppet Show. |

I was there over the weekend and was pretty surprised with the number of tourists all over the place. I have gone each year about this time and I have never seen it busy like this in June. |

We were there this weekend and it was pretty great. Didn't see many Westerners though.
Umm, is it possible for the coffee shops to open earlier than 9AM? WTF?? |

Good lord... German is not a northern European/Scandinavian language, and no one in Sweden sounds like the Swedish chef when they talk in Swedish or English. Try not to rely on the Muppets too much for your knowledge, buddy. |

Yeah wise guy, the link you posted CLEARLY states that German is a WEST Germanic language and not a NORTH Germanic language. |

Lovely weekend, weather-wise. Again, a good number of European folks at Sokcho Beach (not speaking english among themselves).
On my little beach just a few minutes from home, a few local families were enjoying the sea. Some young teenage girls having a carefree time were unfortunately spooked & chased off by an intimidating Korean crazy guy.
On the 3-minute 200 won hand-pulled ferry coming home, I met & spoke with a number of Malaysian tourists enjoying their visit here. |
