Hey everybody. The missus and I have had a job in Hwaseong pushed on us. The job looks good but I'm dubious about the place. From what I've seen on Google maps, it looks like a series of tiny villages with no metro link to Seoul or much of anything really. However, supposedly it is a decent-sized city and a lovely place to live.

Can anyone shed any light on the situation? Would you recommend a young couple live there?

It is pretty rural but there are regular city buses running through the area going to Suwon station and connectivity from there to anywhere (60 minutes from Suwon stn. to Seoul by subway or express bus).

It depends on the exact part of Hwaseong. Hwaseong is a very large city by area, larger than Seoul, but it's mostly rural. There are a few suburban developments, such as Dongtan or Hyangnam (Dongtan is the Korean equivalent of a suburban dream, but you'd probably know if you were living there). Look at the job, the timings and things you'd like to do (eg if I want to go to a Korean class after work, can I make it there on time?).

I would take a good job in Hwaseong over a crappy job in Suwon or Seoul. Of course, no job should be pushed on you.

Rural and the best thing about it is that it's easy to get out of? Yeah I think we'll pass on that one.

It's a shame - living in the countryside would probably be lovely, but would probably get really boring after about a week and we need bright lights and stuff to do. Thanks for the input though guys.

Suburban dream? Maybe 4 years ago when I first moved here, now its anything but. Its on the fast track to becoming like a second seoul with the bright lights and overcrowdedness. This is partly due to samsung building two factories here RIGHT outside my window. Want to talk about pissing people off...

Yes, Hwaseung is a city of city-sized population spread over a very large area. There's no metro, you take a bus to Suwon and catch rail, about an hour to Seoul.

So, unless you're more specific with the location, we can't help you much.

Correct. "Rural" is mostly a thing of the past anywhere within a 100-mile radius of seoul. The country is rapidly being converted to concrete just about everywhere.
