I would have thought that they were one and the same. I'm on an E-7 now and my visa and ARC are the same thing as far as I know.
Your ARC (and thus E-7 Visa) are good one month longer than your contract, to give time to renew.
I think you can even extend your ARC another month longer by showing a ticket and giving a reason to stay. I'm going to try this soon to stay to take the TOPIK test.
Can I ask a follow-on question? If the ARC is extended past period of sojorn to "travel" or in my case take a TOPIK exam, what is my visa class during that "add-on" period. Would it still be E-7? I am curious because there is a chance I could get a job during that add-on month and it would be great if I was still on E-7 rather than some kind of tourist visa. If I were still on E-7 it could be transferred rather than starting a whole new visa.
Sorry if I hijacked your original question. |

I am not sure.. My work permit visa in my passport expires July 7, but my ARC doesn't expire till August..
I didn't even think about it until I got my visa to China and happened to look at my work visa. I thought my school would take care of it, but they responded with an "I don't know".
I am in China right now until July 3rd so I guess I'll find out when I get back..
Not sure about your question, but if you get an international school gig then I would guess you'd stay on an E7.. Hagwon= E2 There's also a D10,I think it's a D10, which allows you to stay in Korea and look for work.
Sorry I am sure this is not helpful.. I hope you are correct about the E7 extension..then I can stop worrying about it. |

I am guessing a bit, but I think that the visa date in your passport means nothing. It is the date that you must enter by for activating your E-7 visa. Once you get an ARC, that is your visa and your key for getting past immigration.
This could differ country by country though. Can you post your country of origin and a real expert should be reading this soon enough and give you the right answer. |

Thank you.. I am from USA.
I will still be here next year after extending my initial two year contract. I am sure you are correct, I just freaked a little when I saw the visa in my passport! |

If you have a valid ARC then the thing in your passport is meaningless.
Your ARC defines your status of sojourn.
If your employment ends before your ARC then either:
a) you report your change of status to immigration and they will give you 30 days to transfer to a new employer, change to a d10 or exit and end your status of sojourn.
b) leave the country and turn in your ARC within 14 days of the end of employment and you are good. No reports or other paperwork to deal with.
c) do nothing and you are in a potential immigration violation after the 14 day mark (failure to report a material change in your status within 14 days).
Your stay is still valid until your ARC expires (provided your employer does not cancel your visa without telling you).

Thank you. I have re-signed with the same school so getting a new ARC would be something the school and I do together? |

Sort of.
They need to provide some paperwork to extend your ARC.
You need to go to immigration to fill in the forms, pay the fee and get your ARC updated.
You need to do it in the last 30 days of your ARC.

ttompatz, bit of a follow on question here.
I am in the final 30 days of my sojourn on an E-7 now. My contract ended on June 20 and my ARC expires July 20. The problem is, other international schools higher starting Aug 1 or Aug 10 at the latest. I am not staying at the same school.
I know I could change to a D-10 and then change back to an E-7 with the new school. But I am trying for the 5 year residency so I don't want to break my visa status.
I was a bit of a fool for signing a contract that ended at the beginning of the summer instead of the end of the summer like other international schools. Oh well, lesson learned.
If I ask for the 30 day extension of sojourn for "travel" (actually, I am taking the TOPIK exam July 20, so have a good reason to ask for the extension), will my visa status still be E-7 during those "bonus" 30 days, and thus easy to transfer to another employer? Or will I be on some kind of "tourist" visa during that bonus 30 days?
Summary
June 20 Contract ended
July 20 ARC E-7 set to expire
Aug 19 "bonus" sojourn extension period, what is visa status?
Thanks for any input! |

E7 - D10 - E7 maintains your status of sojourn unbroken so you don't break your five years for the f-visa application based on residency.
If you let the ARC expire or simply get a 30-day tourist extension then you lose that unbroken status and restart your 5-year clock. (I made that mistake once).
Alternatively, if your new employer is willing you can transfer to them at the end of your ARC (before it expires) and save the switch/switch/switch scenario but it will require you spending an extra 60k next year to extend your ARC again to complete your contract.

Wow! Thanks for the help.
I would have tried the 30 day extension over the D-10 switch if I hadn't seen your reply.
I do hope a new school can pick me up before July 20 though. Would be much easier (this year anyway).
Sincerely, |
