|
|
...you actually get through a student.
This can be in various ways.
For me, today was awesome in that, I have a student who thinks (thought) he was stupid.
Now, for my classes (and I learned this from a former poster), I assign a "class captain". It is just an honorary title (you know how Korean's love things of that sort) and I was asking the class who should it be?
Most pointed to the smartest girl...but asked "Who tries the hardest?". Yep, I knew who it was and though he simply has a hard time with learning another language, he does give it his all...which is more important for me.
I named him class captain but he said "no" because he thought he was too "stupid". I provide some "on the spot correction"...he was class captain and he did well (helps me out, hands out the cell phones after class...but more importantly, has the choice of what we will do when we finish our work).
It is always nice to see a positive change in a student.
I'm not patting myself on the back...I'm just expressing my gratitude to simply play a small role in a the life of a kid, who THOUGHT, he was stupid.
That WILL change.
Hoah. |

A lot of SS soldiers gave it their all too, not knowing what Hitler had in mind.
This student is stupid in the sense he is not as qualified as other students. What is more important is to connect with a student and find out what they are interested in.
If you like playing with dolls that is your prerogative, but don't dress up your student like a doll to be leader for the day. Actually find what that student is good at.
Too many times we hear this crap, "Don't compare students" but if I actually knew how I stood against my friends I would have known how much more to study. Instead I had no clue I wasn't performing to "standard" and I did other stuff.
Sincere honest feedback is more powerful than a one night stand of glorification. Goodbye hitler youth. |

enjoy the feeling - and I hope he remembers it too because whatever the factor in his life was that taught him to feel 'stupid' (such a lovely phrase you used there, but dont worry, Im sure you must not be projecting that onto people) - will still be there long after you have gone, with more gusto than you can muster in a lesson.
So, enjoy the moment... |

"stupid" came from his own mouth...
Some of you are just a nasty, spiteful lot (and this is not limited to this particular index)...comparing a kid who just needed a little guidance and encouragement to, "Hitler Youth"....? It would ave been very easy to simply choose the student everyone was pointing at, i.e., the smartest one. However, she has a natural disposition, in which case, is not a fault. But, the one I chose for "class captain", probably has not had the form of encouragement as the other...and though I do not mistake effort with results, I do not ignore a student who I think CAN do it but just needs some encouragement.
To an extent, it is a bit amusing to actually read posts that seemingly go out of their way to be gaudy, obsequious to their own bitterness, and take umbrage to posts that while ARE written by choice, project a dilettantish approach to project spite.
When I say "amusing", I say in a context that projects an underscored gratitude, that while nobody is perfect, at least I do not posses this lack of sagacity, that some here have...
"Hitler Youth"...really? |

One of the hardest things to do as a teacher is to 'pitch' a lesson/activity/text to students' needs/ability.
Your writing ^ and your tone, is very misguided for the vast majority of Dave’s readers.
The more 1-2 syllable words you use the better.
It seems to me OP that you've just come out of a coma, and you want to use as wider vocabulary as possible. All of those words, so little time...
You come across as pretentious, and if you are half as pretentious in real life, as you come across on Dave's then wow.
I’ve gotta run now. Gotta, grab a carbonated beverage to wet my oropharynx.
It’s hard in the trenches sometimes! |

stupid came from his own mouth? Really?
Well, id guess that there were a few possible reasons for that;
one - he doesnt possess the vocabulary to express himself well enough.
two - he said it in korean and you interpreted it to mean 'stupid'.
three - He does possess the vocabulary but since his Engrish teachers use adjectives like, stupid, ugly, smart, delicious with profusion and never make any concerted effort to move away from them (for example how are you im fine etc etc), or teach people how to be expressive their feelings as humans not products of the Konveyor belt, he was expressing himself parrot fashion.
Or maybe it was another reason.
And yes, a lot of us are spiteful - especially me. Some of us have to put up with lots of crap everyday and this is one place We come and just let rip and say anything without caring who We upset. The rest of my day and in my social life, I have to listen to people spouting crap like your post and have to SNIP - its therapeutic coming here sometimes and quite liberating - as you will learn.
Thats the nature of internet forums - wake up please.
Have a nice - you too, thank you, and you. |

Oh, and btw, following on from what Lucas said, theres a chapter in one of the '?.. for Dummies' books about internet/ forum etiquette.
It talks about how not not rush into debates when you're a new face, like a bull in a china shop and all that, and how you have to build up a rapport before insulting people. Its a bit like life really isnt it.
You might want to read it? |

Lucas...really? My words upset you? Well, I suppose a "thank you" IS in order but not for the harm it may (or may not have caused). I take pride in developing my vocabulary and trying to mix it within my vernacular (that is, as you should know, common speech). I enjoy practicing what I have learned and as an instructor, you should know that one gets better with practice.
So, I do apologize if my words upset you..truly.
But, when my students come into my classroom and look upon my desk, as opposed to seeing simple papers and fingers laying prostrate to a computer, they see books, notes, articles, journals, and yes....even new words, in which, I give to them as well. Every student should inquire as to what their teacher is reading...
So, I gather I should NOT apologize to you, sir.
And as for calling me.."pretentious", well...if you don't enjoy having your own spite befall upon you, perhaps you should act with a bit more prudence and realize that you are not the "big boy on the block".
Le-Paul...I"m sorry you feel the way you do. I cannot say I would act any differently. Then again, I would not simply go out of my way to make others feel as miserable (as you are projecting) as myself.
So, both you can form a junction that attacks me but keep in mind how YOUR are projecting yourselves...even on an internet forum that supposedly, according to Le/La-Paul, is for therapy.
(Though...I did not take this forum in a manner for such activities. You have my humble apologies)

Le-Paul...yes, "stupid" did in fact, come from his own mouth. This is legitimate because...
a. I clearly understood what he said.
b. Before I responded to the student, I double check with my Korean
counterpart who was in the classroom with me and she confirmed.
So...let it go.
In regards to this...

So...are saying that an internet forum, where one can insult another from afar, is the same as life itself? Are you suggesting that, I am not playing by your,, wait..correction..by the rules of this "internet forum book"?
Please...show me this book and I will see what it has to say, especially regarding the chapter titled "insulting people".
I'm sure you have read it...have you not? |

Thank you for the little sermon and its only Thursday!
I hope we can all continue to learn from your apparent natural insightfulness as a teacher and wisdom. I also hope you can realise your 'stupid' students potential whilst here.
namaste - i humbly bow to you.
(its le-paul btw, thanks). |
