|
|
firstly, please forgive me because i'm not very technologically inclined, so if you guys could keep your suggestions/explanations relatively simple, i'd really appreciate it :)
anyway, i just tried to torrent something for the first time here and nothing is happening. at first, i thought it was my torrenting client (i use transmission since i am on a macbook), but the same thing happened in utorrent. i tried a few different torrents and nothing will work.
just to note, torrenting worked perfectly fine for me at home. does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
many thanks in advance! |

A closed port at the router is the most likely suspect followed by "blocked by a firewall on the network or your computer"..

I haven't got a firewall myself, so maybe it's on the network? I'm not entirely sure what a closed port is, though. How do I get an open port?

You do have a firewall, and you have to set it so Transmission can pass through it.
In System Preferences, click "Security & Privacy". Then, select "Firewall" and click the "Firewall Options' button.
Check to see that Transmission is set to "Allow incoming connections". |

I have used Transmission before with no problem at all on this same computer -- it just stopped working when I came to Korea. :\
Also, my firewall is off. |

Green light but no activity… I've had that happen a couple times, but I don't have a fix for it. One time it was like that for a few days at home, then cleared up. I don't know much about networking outside of my little home network, so I don't know what caused the problem.
Is it the same on a different network? When Transmission didn't work at home I connected the laptop to my phone's personal hotspot to verify nothing was wrong with my computer.
The randomize button doesn't help?
Edit: I see some reports now of people saying the green light doesn't always mean everything is ok.. it should mean that, so it's a bug in Transmission. A new version came out a few days ago; make sure you're using that.
Try this site to check the port number you have in Transmission settings: http://www.canyouseeme.org. |

Are you using a router? If so, have you port forwarded? |

Yes, I am using the latest version and the website confirms that my ISP isn't blocking the port I'm using. Randomizing doesn't seem to help. Right now I have two torrents open and this is what they look like -- one is from a Korean website and one just off tbp, I was using it as a test since it has lots of seeders. http://i.imgur.com/PTAQT9j.png
I also just tried to connect using my phone's hotspot and I'm still having the same problem.

Yes, I am. I don't really understand what port forwarding is, but it did come up when I was researching this issue, so I tried to do it using a how-to guide online. However, I don't have the password to my router. I tried to ask my boss and she had no idea what I was talking about because she isn't fluent in English -- also asked the person whose internet I took over and they didn't know. And to top it all off, everything is in Korean. :\ |

The router is the problem then.
Port forwarding is a way for your computer to tell the router where specific streams of data should be directed. Since your torrent data is meant only for YOUR computer, and your computer is on a network, you need to tell the router to send that data to your terminal through a specific port that your computer communicates through.
So, you need that router password in order to forward an open port to torrent traffic. |

No activity with a green port light on the home network as well as the hotspot from the phone. The laptop's firewall is off.
I think that means the issue is with Transmission, not with the router or port forwarding.
I see a couple people on their forums who had a similar problem and got through it. What they did was:
Cycle the firewall off and on (on and off in your case).
Change the Transmission download location to the desktop, and then back to where you want it.
Restart the computer.
Give that a shot. I’ll keep looking. |

True. I forgot about the green light. I have also been having issues with Transmission lately. At random times after waking the computer from sleep, I cannot connect to any peers. Green light. No router. But no connections.
Restarting the torrent doesn't help. Closing and reopening Transmission doesn't help. Only restarting the computer helps.
Switched to uTorrent and everything runs fine. |

Oh wow -- restarting the computer seems to have fixed it! I almost never shut my computer off, so I didn't even think to restart. Thank you both so much! Glad that was an easy fix :) |

If you are moving your computer around and do not have an ssd you really should shutdown your computer before moving it. If it's not an ssd I guarantee your next prob to be a dead hdd. |
