|

There is the English phrase "you are what you eat" with many meanings.
Koreans consume many fermented foods. When you look up fermentation in dictionaries and wikipedia, you find out that is basically turning sugars into acid.
I believe that Korean culture as a whole has many aspects that can be seen as turning sugar into acid, much like the foods they eat. For some inexplicable reason, Koreans have turned wholesome, nourishing parts of life into nightmarish bizarro-world enervated versions. In many ways, they have turned what should be heaven into living hell.
This blog post-- (not my blog btw) -- does the best job I have ever seen of explaining how education has been turned from sugar into acid in Korea.
You may not agree with acerbic and harsh tone of the writing, but the flaws of the Korean educational model should illicit universal condemnation:

Some things are flawed, but when you are consistently number 1 or 2 in education in the world you must be doing something right. There are some things that they can fix, but there are a lot of good things as well. I think high school is where the problems start. |

While I generally find the author of the blog to be correct in his/her assessment of Korea, the tone that is taken in all of the blog posts is needlessly racist.
My other issue here is that none of what he/she writes is mindbogglingly new or innovative. Every single NET (and most younger Koreans) could tell you that the system is flawed in this exact way.
What we need now is more solutions, a proactive approach that can be taken to the higher level.
I will say that he/she is sorely right about one thing though; Korea will be in a world of hurt in the next 20 years or so when the global market starts to encroach more and more and China gets it's shit together. Hell, just right now the furniture industry is getting a dose of reality with the move in and accouterment of prices for IKEA in the next few months. |
