I think the CJIS Division at the FBI in West Virginia has really optimized their processing times. I submitted my fingerprints and application five weeks ago, and my background check came in the mail today! All of the sources on the net suggested a minimum of 6-8 weeks for processing, with the possibility of 12 weeks.
Thought I would share my experience with everybody, especially for anxious job seekers. Has anyone else had similarly fast turn around times with this, or do you think I just got lucky?
Best,

@SteveSteve
5 weeks is quick! Congrats! My FBI Check came back in about 6 or 7 weeks, then another 3-4 weeks for the State Dept. apostille. My concern now is that recruiters and schools still haven't been responding, and since the FBI Check cannot be more than 6 months old to get a Korean visa, I only have a few weeks left before I have to go through the whole process again and spending more $$$ I don't have).
I hope you're able to find work at a good private or public school quickly! Cheers! |

@TravelHot3 -- An additional 3-4 weeks for the State Department apostille? When does it end?!
I live about 8 hours from DC, and I was wondering if it's worth driving to the State Department and doing it in person. If I were to do this, could I get it done right then and there? The gas alone will cost me $100 and I'll have to miss at least one day of work, but I might do that if it's possible. |

@TravelHot3 -- Should have done my research before asking more questions Looks like I can walk in and drop it off, but they don't make it easy!
http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english/legal-considerations/judicial/authentication-of-documents/requesting-authentication-services.html
DROP OFF:
I have to drop it off between 8am and 9am, and I'd be able to pick it up 2-3 business days later. So I'd have to miss more days of work and stay at a hotel longer than expected, but I would be gutted if I missed a job offer because my FBI apostille was tied up in Washington.
APPOINTMENT:
I can make an appointment with somebody, but it doesn't specify if I can apostille more than one document in a single appointment (traveling with my wife so I'd have to) and the website doesn't mention if they do it right then and there. Guess I'll call in the morning and dig deeper.
What would you do?

The first time had all this done (last summer) I was living in Northern Virginia and everything was much faster. I had also considered just taking the Metro (subway) down to the State Dept. and doing it in person. But they don't apostille it immediately. You'd have to drive back to DC on another day to pick it up, or give them a self-addressed envelope to send it back to. Due to unrelated issues, I didn't have the availability to hand it in. I just sent it in by mail and got it back in 2-3 weeks. I'm now temporarily located in the Midwest, and I'd have to say that the farther one lives from Washington, DC/West Virginia, the longer the FBI Check and State Dept. apostille will take. Since you were able to get the FBI Check in 5 weeks, maybe you'll get the apostille back a couple of weeks!
Cheers! |
