They do a criminal check but it's not fingerprinting. They said go to the sheriff for that.

Yea I had a problem with that as well. Most local police departments no longer do fingerprinting because they can't be bothered. Because you said "sheriff" I assume you are American.

In most cities you can go to a private fingerprinting/security firm. They have the FBI-approved fingerprint cards and they don't charge a whole lot. That's what I did, and it worked fine. Again, I don't know where you live, but I didn't have any trouble finding one. Just make sure the prints are basically perfect and not smudged, or else the FBI will reject them.

They might be correct about the sheriff thing, I don't know. Where I come from in the States, we don't have sheriffs.

Hope this helps.

Yes I am an American. By the way are the crc only valid for six months? It could happen where I decide to go at a later time and it would be bad to have to pay again for it.

Yep, CRC's are valid six months from the date they are sent back to you/the date the FBI slaps on it.

How long does it take to get the crc after you applied for it? How much is it?

That is a totally different ball of wax. Usually, according to FBI info, a CRC takes anywhere from 8-14 weeks. The FBI CRC center is located in West Virginia, so that also affects how long, like if you live in Hawaii or American Samoa or something.

When I did it, it took 13 weeks. As for the price, check the website.

Others have had it take 6 weeks. Go figure.

Whatever you do, DON'T use some sketchy expedite company. The FBI rejects that nonsense.

There used to be a CRC "How long is it taking now" thread on Dave's. Don't know what happened to it.

Once again, I hope this helps. Totally byzantine, if you ask me.

Oh, I forgot. If you are in a massive hurry due to unforeseen circumstances/circumstances out of your control, you can contact your U.S. Congressman through the constituency help line, and beg. If you have a good reason/sob story your U.S. Congressman can intercede on your behalf and can light a spark under the FBI's ass.

There are people who have had their Congressman get a CRC check in 3 days.

Good luck.

I am a gyopo. Do you need a CRC for any type of job in Korea or just the English teacher one?

And if it expires after 6 months while you are working in Korea do you need to find another one if you apply to a different ESL job?

Wow! Why do you Americans even bother coming over here if you have to do all that crap? If us Canadians had to go through all that nonsense, I'd doubt many of us would come here. Most of us would just go find another job or country to teach in.

Nothing stopping you from telling them, however there's also nothing stopping them from just going straight to the next applicant who has their documents in hand and is therefore less hassle.
