Kinda reminds me of that classic line from Casablanca:
"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"
I just don't understand why the Korean Times has to make up this stuff about Korean tourists behaving badly...

Pick a package:

and see for yourself.....
I would put most Korean tour group participants in the same category as the Chinese travel package participants that I have been on.
Reminds me a lot of other nationalities tourists going to Europe in the 70's and 80's. There were books written on it then too.

From the article (thanks):
Quote: |
"Being on a plane is like being in a different country," Yoo said. "There are so many foreigners on board. You have to keep that in mind." |
My takeaway is that the behavior itself isn't the problem, it's that foreigners are seeing it. |

But in 2012, Korea ranked sixth on the list of the world’s worst tourists |
I bet the Brits were above them. |

Here's the list of the world's worst tourist, according to the LivingSocial's survey:
1. U.S.-20 percent
2. China-15 percent
3. France- 14 percent
4. Japan- 12 percent
5. Russia- 11 percent
6. Korea- 9 percent
7. India- 9 percent
8. Germany- 8 percent
9. Spain- 7 percent
10. Britain- 5 percent |
I've got feeling America being no.1 might be a general bit of anti-Americanism. This was a survey on opinions I think it said..... Japan above Korea? hmmm |

Not sure that they are still #1 but globally, they are not far off.
(Personally, I would rank the Chinese tourists worse than the Americans).

Aside from the camera taking stereotype... nothing really negative other than in the 80's when the Japanese were buying up property throughout the world. Where I grew up there was a slight anti-Japanese sentiment to them buying real estate. Some people admired their success, others resented them raising property prices. Kind of like the Chinese in Vancouver.
Aside from that, not really negative, but I've been told by various hotel caters that Japanese tourists are pretty particular about their breakfasts. They'll never deviate from their rice and raw-eggs in the morning. But as for lunch, or dinner, they'll eat anything. |

I guess it all hinges on the hassle experienced v money spent ratio. Brit tourists in Spain may do things like organise drinking contests with a girl giving 10 strangers a blow job, but as long as they keep ordering their buckets of cheap spirits the bar owners are happy. A bunch of Korean/Chinese tourists may behave slightly less obnoxiously but may bring their own food, drink much less and swarm over anything free like a plague of locusts. Which may wind up owners more. |

Worlds worst tourists must be
Joint 1st) Russians/Israelis.
However, you only see Israelis on the backpacking route and in certain places like Goa, but they are pretty vile.
Russians in Egypt, again, vile. |

On hiatus from teaching in Korea I worked for a major airline. One day a foreign passenger was causing a scene while boarding an aircraft. My manager and I were having a chat about it and he started telling me about which country's travellers were the best and which were the worst. I was a little surprised when he said that South Korean travelers were the worst(he didn't know I had lived in Korea). I asked why and he said they were too demanding and pushy...loud and could be abnoxious. I thought this to funny as most of us can attest to the older generation being just that way at times.
I then started to take notice of tour groups, Korean and Japanese. The Japanese always quiet, orderly and polite. The Koreans were a mixed bag. Certainly not orderly, often loud and often not polite by western standards. The tour groups are almost completely comprised of middle aged tourists.
Then, about about a year ago I took a trip from Canada to China and then after a few days a visit to Seoul. While waiting at the gate for my flight to show up from Shanghai to Seou, I decided to try to take a nap as I was there early and hardly anyone else around, but after awhile a group of middle aged Koreans showed up and my nap was soon thwarted. Loud talking, exaggerated sounds, etc. No worries. But when it came time to board the flight a group of about 30 Koreans just pushed ahead in line. Absolutely no regard for the fact that I, and several others, were in line first. It took me for a bit of a surprise as I had been away from Korea for almost 3 years at this point. A man and his son, whowere still sat waiting, had a great chuckle at my expense. They witnessed the whole thing. I couldn't help but laugh myself.
Then we landed in Incheon. I was in business class(which was almost empty) and the Koreans were in coach. There was a pretty safe distance between where I was and coach. Yet who got out of the plane first you ask? The same people who began pushing me as I reached up for my carry on. Clearly they did not wait for the seatbelt sign to go off like the rest of us did. Just how to you get beaten out of exiting the plane by dozens of people sitting in coach when you are up in business class? Unreal.
Korea fighting!
Oh, and for the record. Had no issues with the Chinese. |

I just recall once flying from Vietnam to Korea. I might have been the only foreigner on the Korean airline, don't recall really. It seemed to me the Korean flight attendant was pretty embarrassed, like, sigh, what can you do when no one will listen, about the passengers all getting up and ready to rush out before the plane was stopped. |

Spot on.
The cutting in line thing is pretty common with them too. The more of them there are together the more likely they are to cut, and also the less likely someone will call them on it. It seems like mostly older folks doing most of cutting, as well as bumping from behind when there is a line... as though it's a race or something.
But the Korean students traveling for field trips can be annoying too. Almost no supervision from adults/teacher (either drunk or asleep) while the students get to run around the plane for most of the flight, make noise, and milk the annoyed stewardesses for all the snacks/drinks they can possibly get. |
