I've searched (quickly) through the forum topics and found nothing that answers my following questions, but forgive me if this is redundant as I am not a frequent contributor.
I'm heading back to Korea for another round of teaching, this time with a teaching license and a clue. Well, at least half of a clue.
My job and appropriate contract, paperwork and visa are all in the final stages of being completed. Now I'm beginning to figure out all the day-to-day details to arrange that will help me before I touch down in Korea, and one of the first I've thought about is my cell phone situation.
During my first run through Korea the school provided me with an antiquated POS that only qualified as phone because it could more or less only be used to make phone calls. How 1998, I know. I also brought my iPhone along with the desperate hopes I could somehow get it to work under one of the various Korean carriers. So, so naive. I ended up spending the entire time carrying around both "phones" wherever I went because I could still utilize the iPhone with 21st century technology such as wi-fi.
This leads to my question(s): Am I better off buying a phone here (USA) that I know will be compatible with Korean carriers? Wait, is that even possible?
If not, I remember that purchasing a smart phone in Korea can be stupid expensive, at least relative to what I'm used to paying here (~$200 for iPhone5 2 years ago), what is the best way to go about getting a smart phone in Korea without dropping a small fortune within my first couple of weeks after arrival?
Any other tips, tricks, and general advice about this matter are greatly appreciated. |

That was the point, to distract you from the inane stupidity of my questions.
Thanks for the help. |

The questions were not stupid, SS. I was just funnin' with you.
Maybe you can let us know what you decide, and if you find some bargains on either phones or plans. |

yes you can use phones purchased in america here in korea. you might lose out on some of the korean-centric features but if they don't mean much to you then you'd be fine picking up a new nexus and bringing it over instead of paying ridiculous prices at cell phone stores here. |
