Okay, this guy I used to work with would always get his kids repeating slang, ebonics, general garbage talk, and whatnot. He was a nice guy in most respects, and the kids seemed to like him. But I thought it was kind of dangerous in the sense that these kids might have parents with good English skills that could question the kids about what they were learning.

Never seemed to get busted for it, and completed his contract. Now I here he's coming back to the same school for round two.

I never said anything to the boss about it because I felt it wasn't my place and I liked the guy. It was common knowledge among the other teachers that this was what he consistently did. Anyway, ever done something like this or worked with someone who did?

I thought it would have been funny to teach my kids some real hair curling language my final day, but only movie type funny, and generally immoral in real life, so I didn't.

I worked with a guy back in 96 that taught the kids "jap slap", "pimp slap" & "bitch slap". He thought it was insanely funny when a kid came up to him and said "Teacher, JaYoon pimp slapped me!" Shocked

He also used the word "Homie" (sp?) a lot and as such, so did the kids. I will admit I even laughed when this really small 6 year old boy said "whats up homie?" to me one morning. Embarassed

I worked with a guy like that, yeah. Maybe it was the same guy. Shocked He used to bring lame heavy metal music into his classes and get the kids to listen to it six times in a row and then write down all the words they heard. He was proud that he wasted plenty of class time in this manner. Rolling Eyes

I teach slang sometimes and colloquial expressions (to my two oldest students, the rest are too young)... specifically southern speech patterns. But I never teach profanity. The closest I've come to that is these two students now understand the phrase, "I'm gonna smack ya", I feel kinda bad that they picked that up from me, but I've made it clear that it isn't acceptable to hit someone and is only an expression.

Like I've said before, I love teaching "wanna", "gonna", "goin' ", etc... that's what conversation sounds like where I'm from anyway...

Mind you, music can be a good way to learn stuff...it's the mindless screaming so that the lyrics, such as they are, can barely be deciphered even by native speakers, that I object to.

I've allowed my students to listen to American music on days that we are having activities (making sandwiches or Christmas)... but I'm very careful to select music that has no profanity and with easily understood lyrics.

Not to mention that you probably don't want the kids to understand the words. Very Happy

That reminds me of a teacher I knew who used to show his 9 and 10 years R rated horror movies in class. Shocked If he'd worked for my school, I definitely would've narked on him.

i'm a kindee teacher in the mornings and when we have play time in our auditorium, sometimes i play dance games with them, like musical numbers or whatever. anyway, the kids like snappy, R&B beats and what-not much better than the crap that's on the wee-sing tapes. their current favorite beats are "shake ya ass" by mystikal (the lyrics of which are appalling) and "hey ya" by outkast (what is it with groups using Ks instead of Cs?). my kids don't pay one lick of attention to the lyrics, and apparently my supervisor doesn't either because sometimes she sticks her head in to watch the kids wiggle all over the place and she just laughs her ass off!

sometimes i feel a little guilty about it...but then i just turn up the music to a deafening volume. seems to work.
