So I've begun to apply for new jobs and apparently they want F4 visa holders to have FBI background checks? I called immigration and they told me that FBI background checks are not required for F4 visa holders so now I'm confused. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks

You'll need it to teach, so do it asap. It's an OE prerequisite (new).

^ are you sure that the MoE requires an FBI check? Any ideas if a state-check or one done through a channeler would be good enough for the MoE?

All teachers need a national check.

FBI only (physical prints).

The background check is required by the employer not immigration. So, immigration is correct that you do not need the background check FOR THE VISA.

However, what you want is not a visa, you want a job. The Job requires a background check.

Here's an analogy:

I want to go scuba diving. I can't go scuba diving without a SCUBA license.

Do you need a SCUBA license to buy a boat? No. You don't need a SCUBA license to buy a boat. You just need it for SCUBA diving.

In this case, the "boat" is your visa, and "SCUBA license" is your FBI check, and "SCUBA diving" is getting your teaching job.

**EDIT**
Job meaning a Teaching job. Inferring since you posted your question on an ESL cafe, you were asking about a teaching job.

Recent changes for F-series holders is that getting a CRC is needed now. If you will be teaching, you will need one. Because of some past Korean criminals being caught teaching the government decided that F-series needed to be checked. But rather then immigration asking for it, the Education department asks for it.

Get it done! The same I think will be needed now for degrees and even medical too.

Effective in February 2012, ALL TEACHERS in Korea will need to submit a "national" CBC (with apostille) and a degree copy (again with apostille) to be registered at the MOE regardless of nationality or visa class.

The announcement was made about 6 months ago (allowing plenty of time for everyone to get the documents to get into compliance).

E2 holders can submit copies of the documents on file at immigration (get them from immigration @300 won per copy).

F-class holders will have to obtain them or find a new occupation other than teaching.

.

It is NOT an immigration requirement for F-class visa holders nor do you need it for other jobs. It is ONLY an issue if you want to be a TEACHER.

If I am currently teaching at a school on a F4 visa, do I simply hand over the apostilled CBC to my school and they handle it for me, or do I have to submit it myself to MOE? Am I able to submit the CBC every time I change jobs?

Sorry for the necropost, but I thought this would be the best thread to ask in!

I'm currently teaching in Korea on a F4 visa. I'm checking out jobs for next year and I've noticed that many of them are asking for a CBC. I've already submitted one to become a teacher and I'm already on the ground in Korea...do I still need to provide a CBC to get a new teaching job in Korea?

You only need the check if someone asks you for it.

Public school: you will be asked for it
Hagwon full-time: probably will be asked for it
Anywhere else: no one will ask you for it

If it's on file at immigration you can get a copy there, if not then get a new one.

You shouldn't need another one unless you change jurisdictions - it is still on file with the MOE.

NOT RELEVANT for an F4. It is not an immigration requirement for that visa class. They only have to deal with the MOE.

Thanks for the swift response! I will be moving to Busan from Yeongwol(in Gangwon-do). To the MOE it is!

You never know. She could have came on an E2 and then switched later. Or she could have voluntarily placed a check on record at immigration like I did. Don't just dismiss the possibility so quickly.

Here's something that a fellow native teacher pointed out - if we change jurisdictions then we have to get the new CDC?

For example, if I leave EPIK and move from Gangwon-do to Busan to work in a language institute or hagwon, I can't use the one they have on file at the MOE?

PS - I'm not a she...

Reviving this thread rather than starting another one, does one need to get a new background check if having left Korea and returning (F4, obviously)? I assume my previous job would've filed the documents with the MOE from before so would I simply be able to get copies or do I have to do it again?
